Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18044142)

1 Answer

Dan, Find the tech sheet located under the top panel front left corner of the cabinet. Two screws in the back of the unit will free the top cover. Raise the top cover lid and all to grab the tech sheet. Follow instructions in the tech sheet to find the error codes and find the meaning of the error code also in the tech sheet. The error code will describe the issue and testing information on certain pages. This is the first step you will need to take.

Ed for Model Number 110.20022011

In Normal Regular setting My washer fills then switches to wash I hear the shift actuator move, it adgitates a few times then stalls. The cycle will complete. It does spin. Entered manual mode and all systems work well. There was a couple of times the gentle adgitation stopped in manual after a minute. Checked all voltages as described in the service manual. All seem ok. The fault indicated an actuator. I have been running it in Heavy duty super and it adgitates fine...The service manual says mother board. Can you help and if i order either of these are they returnable? Also is there a sequence of operation hiarchy chart describing all cycles and their steps? That may help me. Is it possible the knob is out of position? Why does the agitator work on another setting more aggressive setting?

1 Answer

Hello Ed, if any part is installed it is no longer returnable. Going by the symptom and the fault it shows a faulty actuator, the control board will pause power to the drive motor if it does not see the shift actuator in the correct position. The technical data sheet has all testing information. Wash cycle times/operations are variable, based on the control board cycle algorithms.

Mark, the spin basket will need to be tested by rotating it to see if it spins freely. If it does not spin freely, the motor belt can be removed to isolate the issue to being something in the gearcase side or the motor side by attempting to rotate the spin basket again. If the spin basket still does not rotate freely, then it will need to be inspected for any items that may have found a way in between the basket and the drum. If that checks good, then the issue would likely be in the gearcase W11132267 or from the shifter not properly setting the splutch W10721967. The splutch would need to be inspected for any signs of worn teeth. If the basket did spin freely with the belt removed but not when the belt was on, then the issue is with the motor assembly W10836348.

Dj for Model Number MVWX655DW

Washer is 3 years old tomorrow. Experiencing a very loud squealing, almost alarm type noise when getting to agitator mode. The repairman has come three times and replaced the splutch. As soon as he ran the washer the same thing happened. Checked the splutch and the same thing. The part was "chewed up" along the plastic edges. They reordered the part and are going to replace again in a couple of days. This has been going on for three weeks. Do you think this is the part to solve the problem?

1 Answer

DJ, if the splutch gear teeth are getting damaged repeatedly, the most likely issue is that the shift actuator W10913953 is most likely not fully shifting the splutch into place. The gearcase W11454734 teeth should be inspected for damage as well.

Jim, the plastic arm of the shift actuator should be able to be manually shifted. If the arm does not shift at all, then it is likely that the arm has locked in place and could cause the issue described.

Liz, It would be recommended to get the tech sheet from inside the front left corner of the unit and put this through a diagnostic to see what error code pops up. The error code will tell you what to check so that you make sure that you are replacing the correct part that has failed.

Ray for Model Number Mvwx500xwo

The lid lock has been having a problem at the spin sequence, the machine has been working up to that point. Looks like the washer washer starts to spin but lid lock light flashes and spin cycle stops. I went through the diagnostics and calibration tests and they came up with nothing until recently at the end of the calibration the lid lock light came on. I liked plug out of socket then plugged it back in tried to sta t the sending light came and lid light started fishing but the lid was locked. Nothing else happend. I was going to try changing out the lid lock switch and the shift actuator since they seem to be a weak link in the chain of events. I would appreciate your guidance on this.

1 Answer

Hello Ray, the control board is seeing a problem, if it occurs during motor operation, the lid lock will flash as an alert, also the calibration mode will not be able to correctly finish. Run the Fault Code test cycle and see what code shows and if needed run the Tach test next.

Travis, there could be multiple parts issues or a main control issue. This could not be verified without testing the components. If you could provide the model number for your appliance in a new inquiry, this will allow for the most accurate information to be presented.

Lonnie, With the actuator continuing to turn, this would most likely be caused by a faulty control board.
