The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Dishwasher Food Chopper (Part Number: OEM17951346)

Pat Rowell for Model Number GU2400XTPQ7

I ordered/received a food chopper assembly for our dishwasher, however, there appears to be a problem with how it was assembled by Whirlpool. There is a flat washer between the blade and the screen, which prevents the blade from touching the screen. I read on your forum where someone had actually disassembled the chopper, but I don't think that is possible without damaging the shaft and/or the retaining device that holds the blade in place. My question is whether I am missing something here and I can take the assembly apart to remove the flat washer; or should I return it to AppliancePartsPros? The part was boxed by Whirlpool, then put in a second box by your company to be mailed to me; thus, you never actually saw the food chopper. My fear is that Whirlpool has assembled them all incorrectly, and I may get another one put together like this one. Thanks. Pat in Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea

Pat, On this chopper blade there is supposed to be a washer between the blade and the chopper screen. This is to lift the blade slightly so that the blade does not make noise while spinning.

Hello Kelvin, The chopper W10083957V should be turnable but it will not turn freely since it is attached to the motor on the backside. You should remove it and make sure the assembly is not damaged. If there are a lot of food particles on the screen it has most certainly failed.

Dora, Yes, there are several things to check and verify when you replace the chopper screen and blade. When you removed the original screen, you need to check the tabs in the cenetr of the impeller 8193951A (black area) make sure the tabs are not damaged or worn. The tabs on the back side of the chopper blade/screen have to engage the tabs on the impeller, in order to drive the blade and cut up the soft food particles. You also need to check and make sure there is nothing inside the impeller housing, that will create a noise as well. The screen and chopper blade do have to be installed properly and then the protector WP8531857 needs to be installed after you're sure the screen and blade are installed and engaged the tabs of the impeller.

Hello Diy, The chopper screen should never stop up with food particles. If it has, the chopper assembly W10083957V should be replaced. This is not a part that should have to be cleaned out since the blade should ride against it and the water flow should wash away the particles.

Cordell for Model Number KUDCO3FVSS4

My dishwasher has been getting louder and louder over the past few months. I got into where the shredder blade and screen is and removed it to examine for ware. It seemed to be in good condition but I the hole in the screen seems to be much bigger than the plastic shaft that goes through it that the shredder is attached to so it allows a lot of movement. Is that normal or is something worn out? Also as I was reassembling it I noticed that around the plastic slot that the screen slides into as well as the top that the screen fits in to hold in place has some ware marks. It looks like the blade (because of the sloppy hole in the screen) has been hitting the top and bottom. Does the entire assembly need replaced? It is only about 15 months old What would you recommend?

1 Answer

Cordell, The chopper assembly W10083957V does have a larger hole than the chopper blade shaft, you'll also notice the assembly is spring loaded and will move in and out. It is designed this way, to compensate for solid debris(the wear marks) and to prevent impeller lock ups and damage to the impeller as well. When you had the pump dismantled, did you check to see if there was any solid debris in the volute, or damage to the impeller blades, you may want to check.

Mina, The "chopper" blade, is on one side of the screen. On the opposite side of the screen it should have the washer the spring, then the tqabbed end of the drive shaft, You should be able to move the shaft and chopper blade in and out of the screen. The tabbed end of the shaft assembly will be inserted into the pump housing, so the tabs alighn and meet the tabs in the center of the impeller, you'll need to slide the screen assembly into the housing at a slight angle with the smaller portion of the screen down towards the bottom of the housing. Then install the housing inlet protector to hold the screen in position.

Claire, The chopper assembly and screen are pre formed and trimmed to fit a specific way in the chamber opening. " Remove the screw securing the foreign objects protector to the sump base and remove the protector. Remove the screw securing the inlet protector to the pump base and lift the inlet protector out. Remove the chopper assembly from the impeller shaft and lift it from the sump base" . You'll need to remove the protector and recheck the chopper and screen for damage, or misshaping and replace the chopper as necessary.

Bob, Once you remove the accumulator and volute you can remove the chopper and screen. The chopper blade is "spring loaded" if you pull out and hold the chopper blade, you should be able to lift the screen and chopper assembly up and out of the sump. Reverse the procedure and test the machine for operation. Just be careful with the blade and the edge of the screen.

Henry for Model Number Whirlpool Quietpartner III

My chopper blades turn freely on the shaft when the spring is fully extended (when the blade is pressed against the stop washer at the end of the shaft). At that point on the shaft, it is rounded so the blade spins freely on the shaft. Only when the spring is depressed and the blade slides down the shaft does it engage on the flat edges of the shaft and lock onto the shaft for turning. Is this normal behavior or has the end of my chopper shaft been worn/rounded down due to some blockage? thanks

1 Answer

Henry, When the assembly is in it's "relaxxed" / normal position, the chopper blade should be against the screen, and the tabs on the chopper blade shaft end will engage the tabs on the inside center of the impeller, this will "drive" the chopper blade to maserate the garbage. If there should be something in the chamber that cannot be "chopped" the chopper blade will move forward, and disengage the tabs on the impeller, to reduce damage to the impeller, and chopper assemblies. You'll need to remove the motor assembly WPW10757217 and check the tabs in the center of the impeller for damage.
