The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Joe, To reinstall the lower spray arm you would just sit the spray arm on flush and insert and tighten nut. The nut will keep it in place and if it is centered it will not wobble.

Angelo for Model Number 66516489300

I took off all the coverings to clean out the trap and the chopper screen was completely clogged. After removing, cleaning and inspecting and comparing it against the pics of the new parts, my chopper assembly seems to be in good order. That said, the 4 prongs of the back side of the chopper shaft do not seem to engage with anything and when installed I can spin the chopper blade freely which drives the chopper shaft in turn (the chopper blade and chopper shaft are still integral). When looking at the motor shaft (with chopper removed) I don't see flukes or pinion that might engage the 4 prongs of the chopper shaft. Am I missing a part that engages with the cog side of the chopper shaft?

Angelo, You will also need to check the spring on the chopper assembly W10083957V and make sure it is maintaining pressure against the screen, so the coupler tabs will engage the tabs on the center of the impeller assembly 8193951A and will "drive" the chopper blade.

Hello Paul. It is normal for the blade not to be sharp. If the unit is not spraying with alot of pressure and the dishes are dirty, you either need to clean the spray arms or replace the pump motor assembly on the unit.

Hello George. You will need to remove the lower spray arm and the cover off the sump assembly. Once the cover is removed, you will need to remove the cover over the chopper blade. You can now access the chopper. Pull upward on the blade filter and the chopper W10083957V will lift out of the sum assembly. Reinstall in reverse order. Thank You.

Everything seems to work ok, except the dishwasher is extremely loud when the circulator pump comes on. When the circulator pump shuts off, it sounds like its siezes up. I checked and cleaned the chopper screen. The screen was partially clogged but I noticed that the chopper blades were worn down, as if it was rubbing against something (the screen maybe?). The rest of the components attached to the chopper (spring and nylon coupler) appear to be ok. When I reassyembled the chopper, the nylon end slides onto the impeller in a way that it will spin, but it doesn't snap into place(It sits loosely coupled). Would this be causing the loud noise? or do you think its motor bearing?

Mike, The chopper assembly W10083957V is "spring loaded" and can be forced to jump the drive teeth on the wash impeller 8193951A , but Based on your description, You'll need to remove the motor assembly and check the wash impeller and housing for debris and damage. Good Luck and Thanks

Hello Dan. No, the blade should not touch the metal screen. If the screen is ruff, and the blade is hitting it, you will need to replace the chopper assembly W10083957V. Hope this helps.

Hello Rich. The substance you describe has to be something that has gotten into the unit after the fact as there isn't anything in it to produce the substance. The chopper blade rides on a cog that it is forced against by the chopper blade spring in the blade assembly. It will seem loose in the installed position. I would use a shopvac and get as much out as possible. Then I would run a sanitation cycle with dishwasher magic TJ104. Of course a sanitation cycle means no dishes, no detergent, heat assist, and normal cycle. Once you get the stuff flushed out, the issue will be solved unless the stuff gets put into the unit again. Be aware it isn't my job to lay blame for a problem. This was not the intention. Things get dropped into dishwashers all of the time and if it fell off of the kitchen counter into the unit, it's easy to get past you. Have a great day!

Hello Shaw. If the chopper W10083957V is good, and the screen is just dirty, then you can clean it and reinstall it. If the motor is dragging, it is best to replace the sump assembly with the motor. Hope this helps.

Hi Rue. Chopper assy. part # W10083957V. This whole assy. can be replaced from the inside of the tub. You just need to use a little dab of grease on the shaft when inserting them together. You may need to slightly rotate the motor shaft to realign for assy. The screen will all slide in place as one part together. Thank You.

Hilda A. for Model Number Kitchenaid KUDi02iRWHO

The dishwasher is not getting the dishes clean. Water doesn't get to the top rack. The spray arms spin and water does fill up in the bottom of the dishwasher. I've poured three boxes of baking soda and vinegar down the holes. It is sounding more like the chopper problem than the inlet valve. How do I get the gray button off the top of the sprayer to remove it to check the chopper and clean it out? The button doesn't turn by hand at all.

1 Answer

Hello Hilda. You will hold the hub WP8268342 and turn the lower spray arm to unscrew it from the hub nut and remove the spray arm. Hope this helps.
