Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Compressor Start Device Kit (Part Number: OEM11621988)

1 Answer

Perplexed, Yes, replacing the compressor start device 8201799 is a good place to start. It sounds like that component is the most likely issue, it was weak and causing the refrigerator to work intermittently, now it has failed completely. When you service the compressor, make sure you label the wires as you remove them, and follow the instructions that come with the start device kit.

I have been told that the relay and overload in this kit is compatible with the compressor on my LG LMX25981ST, which uses an older version ptc assembly that is no longer available. The old component is a single box containing the relay that the overload plugs into, as well as a rectangular capacitor with two male prongs. This assembly (Embraco 513604044) then goes onto the compressor. I understand how to fit the new components onto the compressor, but am not sure how to wire it. Instructions refer to red and white wires, my harness has blue and black wires. The blue attaches to a prong labeled "N" and the black to one labeled "L". Also, instructions refer to a wired capacitor whereas mine has just two male prongs. Do I attach the black wire should go to the overload, and the blue to the relay? Can I leave the capacitor out? On the old relay it appears to be placed in series between the harness and the relay.

Long story short. Fridge was clicking the other day and later in the day found that the fridge was hot on both top and bottom. Was able to get the cover off the compressor and disconnected the Relay. Shook it and it rattled like crazy. Replaced the relay this evening and the freezer is working fine. The fridge is lagging behind but is cooling okay. I did notice that the compressor is hotter than all get out. You can only put your hand on it for about 7-10 seconds due to the extreme heat. Is this okay or is there something else that could be failing?

Hello Harry. Yes, It is normal for the compressor to get very hot to the touch. This is the process of removing the heat from the unit.

I am trying to figure out what part I need to replace. Neither side of the fridge is cooling so took off the back and I noticed that the white wire that goes into the relay was just hanging,it looks as if it hardened at the terminal and broke off. The red wire that goes to the overlay looks fine.Would the white wire be the reason the compressor doesn't come on? The relay isn't rattling or anything it just seems to be that white wire. Would I need to order the entire condenser fan motor assembly just to get the wire harness? Or would me replacing that not help the compressor? Thanks

Jen, The power cord with harness is what you would need to replace part number [AP298860] but has been discontinued with no replacement. You can splice a piece of wire to from the old harness to the relay.

Carlos, In most cases the leads from the capacitor will go on the number 1 terminal and the number 3 right above the 4. The neutral will connect to the 2 terminal and the L1 would connect to the overload. We would need to have the model number to properly determine this by looking at a wiring diagram. Please post your model number with a new question on the parts page. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx

Hello Steve. Yes, it does sound like your on the right track and if the part does not fix the unit, you can return it. Thanks.

Kip, The white on wire would go to the relay. The red would go to the overload. There should be 1 blue wire from one side of the cap and the other wire from the cap should be white. The white should be 2 white to 1 connector. The overload goes to the bottom with the red connected to it. The relay will go to the top 2 pins and the double white will go to the left side and the blue to the right side. It is possible for you to eliminate the capacitor if it cannot be connected.

Hello Cathy, The start relay is the part that makes both windings in the compressor energize at startup and disengages the start winding when the compressor has started. The specifications should be on the units' tech sheet. I'm sorry but the specifications relating to wattage are not listed in our library but are normally related to the compressor specifications since the compressor is the component that draws the amperage and consumes the wattage.

Sharee, The condenser fan motor not running would not cause the compressor not to run. The fan motor could cause the relay to blow if the compressor was running with the fan not going. You should look at the freezer thermostat from red to a known neutral for 120 vac to see if it is sending power to the compressor and subsequently the condenser fan motor. The most likely cause will be a bad freezer control or defrost control board or broken wiring

L Wilson, In most cases when the unit is clicking and not cooling then it is the start relay 8201799 on the compressor that has failed. You do need to check to make sure that the condenser fan is running and if not check to make sure that there is power getting to it and if so replace the condenser fan motor.
