Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Refrigerator Compressor (Part Number: OEM13543980)

Jeannie, You will want to pull the rear wall in the freezer compartment and check for the frost pattern on the evaporator. If the coils are completely impacted with frost or ice then this would be a defrost issue in which you will want to check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat to make sure that they have continuity. If they have continuity then the control board would be faulty. If there is no frost pattern at all then this would likely be caused by a bad 3 way valve located in the back of the unit and is part number WPW10364560.

C.O. You would want to check the frost pattern in the freezer on the evaporator coils. If the coils have a nice even frost pattern from the top to the bottom then the refrigerant would be ok. Make sure that the fan in the freezer is working. If there is a sealed system issue it would require a licensed technician to correct.

Ed for Model Number Kitchenaid KSCS25INSS00

Hi. My fridge just recently stopped working. The freezer is no longer freezing and the fridge is no longer cold at all. In fact, all it does is stay on but no air at all. The electronic thermostat flashes and beeps. I replaced the condenser motor thinking it might be that but it wasnt. Could it be the compressor? If so, how complex is the install? Also, my ice maker stopped making ice. Do I need to replace the whole unit or should I just replace the motor? Thanks

1 Answer

Ed, It would be more likely that the inverter for the compressor has failed rather than the compressor. If the compressor has failed you would have to have a certified tech come to replace it as the refrigerant would have to be evacuated and then more put in after compressor was replaced.

Roger B for Model Number Kenmore/Whirlpool10670862990

The Refrigerator was made in 1999 and I'm worried it might be time to replace it. Rite now it works perfect but my question is when it shuts off you get a banging noise that comes from the compressor. You can also shake the compressor by hand and you can here something banging around inside. Is the compressor on it's way out. Since it still works perfect should I just ride it out or buy a new fridge before it goes bad and ruins my food. I don't want to replace the compressor on this old of a fridge. Thank You Roger Vista,Ca

Roger, With this issue it does sound like the compressor is on its way out. It may last a while longer but would not be able to say how long it will last.

Steve, Yes, transporting a refrigerator laying down, can affect the refrigerator . Basically, laying the refrigerator down, allows the oil in the compressor, and the liquid refrigerant to migrate up and into the system and can create a restriction that causes the refrigerator to not cool. An old rule of thumb is to leave the refrigerator upright for as long as the refrigerator was laid down, or longer, before you apply power to the machine. This will allow the chemicals and oil to migrate back into the compressor, and reduce the possibility of a restriction.

Donna, Not sure which fan you are needing but we are not showing either of the fans or compressor as being discontinued at this time. If you click on the part number listed it will show you the availability of the part. The evaporator for your unit is part number 482731, the condenser fan motor is part number 833697 and the compressor part number is W10439638.

Hello Eric. If there is a sealed system repair needed on the unit, you will need to take it to an HVAC technician to repair the unit.

Allen, Yes you are correct, any resistance between any compressor pin connector to chassis ground or the compressor casing would indicate a damaged winding, and the compressor would neeed to be replaced.

Richard for Model Number Icemaker EC5100XFB0 Compressor W10309988

Hello, I rebuild my 15 year old Icemaker by installing a new Compressor, Evaporator, and Water Solinoid Valve. In my shop it started up right and produced Ice in an Hour. Once installed in the House it has been very slow or little performance at all. After leaving it for a month it still has Refrigeration Pressure. It will chill the Evaporator but at a slow rate. It has 7 oz of Freon 134a. The evaporator freezes thickest in the middle an indication it has enought refrigerant. Thinking I might of had a short lived compressor I just replaced it again. 3 hrs on a Vacume Pump. Installing the Freon it took an Hour to draw in 7 oz. Slow performance again. Compressor is running its getting warm on top. So my Question; The Compressor came with a diffrent Coil- Overload protector ? device but it didn't come with detailed instructions on what to do with it. I just used my old one off my original Compressor. Its hooked to the 3 Pins on the side of the compressor. My Icemaker only has 2 wires a black and white. Should I be useing the new upgrade with my new Compressor. If so what diffrence should it make, if its running now how would it have reduced performance? Its Single Phaze so it can't run backwards or slower. Thanx....

1 Answer

Richard, based on your post description, The evaporator should have an even frost/ chill pattern on the complete evaporator. Not a, heavy frost in the center, and lighter pattern on the outer edges. There are a couple of possibilities, The evaporator has a floating restriction, due to non condensables, or liquid in the evaporator. The reversing valve or solenoid could be faulty and allowing a minor heat leak, and the system could be " overcharged" creating a pressure flow issue with the refrigerant. It's doubtfull, you have a leak or an issue with the compressor. Thanks and Good Luck

Hi Ray. Basically the manufacturer pre determined compressor oil fill level. They (compressors) are all fitted per sealed system freon need size combined with the length and the diameter of the tube size. Under fill and over fill is extremely detrimental. Send us your model # as then we will be able to see what the manufacturer recommends for your particular model #. Thank You.
