The Motor Coupling is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This coupling connects the ice dispenser motor to the ice dispensing mechanism, allowing the motor to drive the ice auger and dispense ice effectively.

Causes of a bad motor coupling can include wear and tear from regular use, overloading the ice dispenser, or mechanical failure of the dispenser motor.

Symptoms of a bad motor coupling include:

  • The ice dispenser not functioning or dispensing ice intermittently
  • Unusual noises such as grinding, clicking, or rattling during operation
  • The ice auger not turning or dispensing ice properly
  • Visible cracks, breaks, or wear on the coupling

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Motor Coupling (Part Number: OEM18048483)

1 Answer

Greg, There are one of 2 ways to go about this. The first would be just to thread the new coupler in place and leave the old one on which the ice will work doing it this way. The other is to remove the auger housing and then wedge the coupler with screwdrivers and then using a hammer tap it until it re-threads on the auger motor shaft. Then you would be able to remove it and put the new one on.

Barbara, If the coupling is just turning in place they it will be difficult to get it off. The way to do this would be to take out the motor housing and wedge stuff under the coupling. Once you have it wedged you will need to use a hammer to tap it off. If unable to get it off then you can also just put the new coupling on the shaft unless you need to replace the motor then you will need to wedge and tap off. It does come off counterclockwise.

Cynthia, Unfortunately the auger motor direction cannot be changed to go in reverse. You will want to make sure that the auger coupler is on tight.

Lewis, The auger motor on the unit does not reverse. The way the unit differentiates between crushed and cubed is the crush/cube solenoid. The solenoid sits next to the auger motor and the arm on the ice bin goes into it. On cubed it will pull the arm up and open a door to allow the ice to flow past the crusher blades. If you are having an issue with the unit not dispensing cube ice then check to make sure that the solenoid is not damaged or stuck in the up position.

Cythia, The auger motor coupling should turn in a clockwise direction at 16 RPM. it is a 120 VAC low torque motor. The first check should be at the drive coupling WPW10169511 they have a tendency to "strip" on the shaft and not drive the auger shaft.

Hello Carrie, I normally rack it with my adjustable wrench to break it loose fro the shaft. Of course you can use a hammer but you just have to hit it in the direction to unscrew it from the shaft and it will normally thread off easily unless the shaft or coupler has stripped.

Minniemouse for Model Number ED5VHEXVB00

Wont dispense ice. My problem is the coupler turns when the ice bucket is out and I can easily stop it with my hands. How do I know if my coupler is the problem or the motor? I watched your video which shows how to remove and replace a stripped coupler, but mine does not have a nut on it. I can spin it freely in both directions. If it is just the coupler then how do i get it off if theres no nut holding it on? I've tried pulling it, that doesnt work, any suggestions?

MinnieMouse, Try to turn the coupler by hand and if it spins freely then you will want to replace the coupler. The coupler should turn with the motor shaft.

MSL, The only way to get this coupler off, you would have to wedge something under the coupling and tap the part off. It is very difficult to do, you can install the new coupling on top of the old coupling. It will not cause any issue with dispenser.

Rochele, Without knowing what kind of noise the unit is making it would be hard to determine as there are several possibilities. Check your condenser fan motor which is one of the most common reasons for noise. If it is in plastic casing then the fan motor shaft is probably moving around unnaturally. Also check to see if you can determine where the noise is emanating from.

Hi Penny. The auger motor coupling has the nut already built in as you can see it. It is a LT. hand thread and after initial tightening, it will self tighten when you use the auger bin. Part # is 316576631. Thank you.
