Part Number: OEM18031215
Manufacturer Part Number: WP67004188

This evaporator defrost heater melts frost from the evaporator coil during the automatic defrost cycle to restore airflow and stable temperatures. Replacing a failed heater helps prevent ice buildup that restricts cooling and leads to warm spots. What it does:

  • Heats the evaporator coil to clear frost/ice during defrost
  • Helps maintain proper airflow between freezer and fresh food sections
  • Typical symptoms: heavy frost on the back panel/evaporator, weak cooling or rising temperatures
  • Also cause evaporator fan noise from ice contact and longer run times
What's included:
  • 1 evaporator defrost heater
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; allow any ice to thaw
  • Access the heater behind the freezer's rear panel; avoid damaging fins or refrigerant lines
  • Secure the heater and route wires exactly as original, keeping them clear of the fan and sharp edges
  • Restore power and verify the defrost cycle per the service procedure

For Whirlpool Defrost Heater (Evaporator) (Part Number: OEM18031215)

Marcus for Model Number MSD2651HEQ

Have 5 yr old fridge. 3 months ago the coil iced up and the fresh food side got warm. I unplugged for 2 days - turned back on and it was ok again. 2 days ago the coil iced up again. I was in process of cking ohm resistances when the fan and comp shut down and the heater heated up, defrosting the coil. So I am assuming that the heater, thermostat are ok. But why does the coil occasionally ice up and cause fresh side to get warm? Intermittent signal from circuit board?

1 Answer

Hello Marcus. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the defrost control board W11227239 is bad and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps.

In last 3 months My freezer coil iced up 3 times. 1st time I thawed it 2 days and it was ok after that. It happened again and I was in process of checking continuity when the fan shut down and the unit went into defrost mode. The heater kicked in and it defrosted. Seems to me that all 3 "normal" parts of the defrost system should be ok. Why, then does the coil occassionally ice up - causing the fridge to get too warm? Could it be that the ADC is intermittent? Or maybe the "tight" space the fridge fits into is a problem? Fridge is only 5 yrs old.

Hi Marcus. In my professional opinion is that 90% of the defrost issues stem from the adaptive defrost control board part # W11227239 sending intermittent voltage (Bad defrost relay on the board) And the defrost thermostat part # not closing. I would use a volt/ohm meter part # MA-DM1 to assist. you in your diagnosis. Use the supplied wiring diagram to follow that you will find folded in the controls or in the toe kick grill below. Thank You.

I have a maytag side by side fridge that doesn't hold the freezing cycle: @ 0 hour - compressor kicks in and runs. @ 1 hour - compressor runs, evap fan runs, frost on evap. @ 3 hour - compressor runs, evap fan runs, evap is warm. @ 5 hour - SAAB I changed the defrost thermostat, the ADC and the same behavior and it does not maintain freezing point 0 celcius? I checked the harness of cables and the circuit is closed. Could it be the defrost bar? During running, I lower cold control

Jon, With a new ADC board, thermostat, and the run times you listed, I would not suspect you to have a defrost issue. It sounds more like a sealed system issue, probably a restriction in the system. Make sure there is an even coat of frost across the complete evaporator assembly at the 3 to 5 hour run time. Good Luck and Thanks

My refrigerator is only 13 month old. The back wall of the freezer is building up ice and the upper part of the refrigerator stop cooling. I removed the back wall and found complete ice buildup. I thought the fan that routs the cool air up from the freezer was defective but is not so. After doing a bit of research, it can be one of the next components: the defrost thermostat part # AP4009169, defrost heater PART # AP4078434 or the ADC(control unit)part# AP4366538. Please advice.
