This evaporator defrost heater melts frost from the evaporator coil during the automatic defrost cycle to restore airflow and stable temperatures. Replacing a failed heater helps prevent ice buildup that restricts cooling and leads to warm spots. What it does:

  • Heats the evaporator coil to clear frost/ice during defrost
  • Helps maintain proper airflow between freezer and fresh food sections
  • Typical symptoms: heavy frost on the back panel/evaporator, weak cooling or rising temperatures
  • Also cause evaporator fan noise from ice contact and longer run times
What's included:
  • 1 evaporator defrost heater
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; allow any ice to thaw
  • Access the heater behind the freezer's rear panel; avoid damaging fins or refrigerant lines
  • Secure the heater and route wires exactly as original, keeping them clear of the fan and sharp edges
  • Restore power and verify the defrost cycle per the service procedure

For Whirlpool Defrost Heater (Evaporator) (Part Number: OEM18031215)

Earl for Model Number MZD2665HEB

STOPPED FREEZING a few years ago....fan still running...replaced the start capacitor and relay and worked for another year, replaced those again....worked last year. Now upon restarting, it all started, froze one tray of ice cubes and within two hours all ice cubes melted and both sides too warm.... Replaced both capacitor and relay again, fan runs nicely, everything very clean, but compressor will not kick on...is there a chance the defrost thermostat is locked in ON position?

1 Answer

Hello Earl, having to replace the relay/overload several times indicates the compressor was starting to fail, now it has failed completely.

Les, If you got 30 ohms of resistance on the heater then it is good and will want to test the defrost thermostat if the unit is not defrosting.

Hello Charles. You will need to check and see if the condenser coils are clean and make sure the condenser fan motor is running on the unit. If not, the freezer will not work properly.

Symptom- Fridge not cold (1st problem) Coils freezing Would be solution- Had the freezer fan replaced which fixed the fridge not getting cold for 3 months. Then coils started freezing. Replaced the timer and thermostat - seemed to fix the problem for another 3 months or so. Replaced the thermostat again- but did not fix the problem. When I replaced the thermostat the first time the 2 wires came out of the white modular connector which connects to the thermostat (At least 1 wire does) Those 2 wires are soldered to a metal plate that slides in to the white modular connector. I was able to push that back in to the modular connector but am afraid that's where the problem is. Could replacing the heating element be the answer in this situation? Thanks, Joe

Joe, If the connectors for the heater is where the wires came out at then yes a new heater would be what is needed. The terminals coming out of the other side of the connector on the thermostat side should not cause an issue if they are reseated and not coming back out.

Steve, If the evaporator fan is not running but the compressor is then you will need to check to make sure that the evaporator fan is getting 120 vac to it. With the fan not running it is not pulling the air across the evaporator and will cause a heavier frost build up on the evaporator coils. If there is not 120 vac coming to the fan then most likely the ADC board has failed and not sending power. If there is 120 vac then the fan is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Hello Nick. Did you check to see if the fan motor was running good, and where the noise is coming from? This could lead you to the issue with the unit. Make sure it is not the flapper in the dispenser popping and causing the ice issue.

A while back, the compressor on this unit ran all the time. I replaced the freezer thermistor and all was well until recently. Now I hear a fan running all the time. The temps in both freezer and fresh food sections seem fine, and when I run the diagnostic tests everything tests OK except that the defrost test shows the defrost thermostat always shorted (closed), and I am not sure if this is normal. The temps seem fine and I see no ice build-up anywhere, but I hear a constant fan running. I think it might be the evaporator fan, and don't know if that is a problem or not.

1 Answer

Hello Charles, The defrost thermostat will show closed as long as the temp is getting below 12 degrees it will show closed. If the temperature gets above 42 degrees the thermostat will open at 42 degrees. It is not uncommon for evaporator fan motor to run for long periods of time.

Hi Heather. Open the freezer door and feel the center divider facing. Is it too hot still ? If so then the condenser coils need blown out with compressed air. Make sure the cond. fan blade is clean along with the rear cover which directs the proper air flow. The compressor is not noisy is it ? Do you hear it clicking on and off loudly ? This is a sign of the compressor relay assy part # W10613606 needs replaced once you insure the compressor ohms out ok and the internal windings are ok and not shorted.Use a volt/ohm meter part #@ MA-DM1 to assist you in your diagnostics. Are you sure the evaporator fan is turning up to speed ? Part # WPW10128551. If all of this is good then you need to replace the cold control part # WP67005335. Thank You.
