Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Motor Start Switch (Part Number: OEM18038667)

David, I would check the lid switch on the top of the washer. You should be able to hear a click whenever the lid is closed, if you don't, you will need to replace the switch, part number 285671

Geoff, With the unit not draining then you will want to test to see if there is power getting to the motor when the unit should drain. If there is then this will be an issue with the pump itself.

Sandy, First check the lid switch WP3949238 and wiring, Make sure you can hear the switch "click" as you open and close the lid several times. Check the lid hinges and grommets/ bearings, make sure the lid is fitting properly. If all's OK replace the timer WP3953066 .

Hello Mark. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the motor WP3352287 is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Ultra Clean Cycle selected. The washer fills and agitates as it should but once the cycle selector moves to rinse the washer keeps agitating with the tub full of water as if the cycle selector is still on wash part of the cycle. The cycle selector continues to advance past rinse and through spin agitating and then to off where the agitation stops and the tub is left with soapy water. Another clue If I run this same cycle again except when the cycle selector is on rinse I push in the cycle selector knob to stop and then pull it out to start then the machine recognizes its on the rinse cycle and will drain and rinse and spin without agitation. Stopping and starting the machine by the cycle selector is the key to have it rinse and spin other wise the full cycle will be agitation(wash) only.

Lorenzo, If the unit is doing the same with the pump off of it then this will most likely be caused by a faulty timer on the unit.

Kenmore washer, been with me since fall of 1990. Has begun to skip spinning after the rinse. Pump runs and drains the water, timer continues through the cycle, but tub doesn't spin. Problem happens on all cycles, but is not 100% consistent - sometimes, it *does* spin, but usually not. Observations: when it's in the spin cycle, pushing in the timer knob (stopping the machine) and pulling back out will engage the spin. Lifting the lid and re-closing will also engage, *but* there has to be a slight delay - a quick 'flutter' of the switch (when it's closed 'artificially', as in with a screwdriver) won't engage. Timer, clutch, and lid switch have been replaced. Nothing 'obviously' wrong inside. I cleaned the motor start switch with DeOxit - I did notice that the 'arm' was a little sticky, and that's been resolved. When I reassembled after replacing the clutch and cleaning the start switch, it worked properly for two loads. Then reverted to old behavior. The start switch is about all I can think of that's left to replace - it's obviously not the motor or the drive; it's not the timer or the lid switch. The only failure mode I can come up with is something sticking in the switch that requires current interruption to resolve. Thoughts?

Hello Robert. If the clutch is new, then either the drive tube W10820043 or the transmission 3360629 are the issue. Either can cause the issue you are having with the unit. You can check the drive tube for wear by removing it and looking for score marks on it.

Jon, This issue sounds like it would either be caused by a faulty motor or the contacts in the timer are sticking and sending power to the motor to agitate and spin at the same time. This would be the most likely cause.

Fred, This issue would most likely be either that the motor switch is not switching to the slower speed or the timer contact is not making for the delicate speed. It would more likely be in the motor switch than the timer.
