For Whirlpool Motor Start Switch (Part Number: OEM18038667)

Woody Alexander for Model Number LSB6500PW4

Unit randomly shuts down, sometimes cycling timer start switch on and off will restart immediately but usually requires 15-45 min wait time to reaccuate timer start button. Then will run 1-4 loads before random shut down occurs again then the usual wait time to restart. On some restart attempts unit gives low pitch buzz for a few seconds but will not start seems as if overheat issue with one or more components. Also getting a heat odor but not characteristic wire burn seems more like something from motor or motor starter. Unit runs perfect and timer cycles in normal manner until random shut down.

Woody, There are a couple of possibilities for this issue. The first thing would be a pump that is dragging causing a drag on the motor. The second but unlikely would be a contact in the timer breaking or engaging when not supposed to. The last thing would be the center post bearings starting to wear and causing drag that is causing the motor to overheat.

Have a Kenmore 90 series washer, model number 110.26901691. Recently replaced the lid switch with no further issues. Yesterday, during agitation phase the machine agitated very very slowly while making a clicking noise. Changed the wash settings for quicker agitation, no change. Rinse and spin cycle work fine. Additionally, while this was occurring, the lights were dimming slightly. I had capacitor checked at nearbly appliance shop and it is working within range. Also checked the red wires leading to motor and capacitor for breakage, none found. Could someone please advise what the problem may be?

RMR, You're partly on target. The problem could be a "sticky" contact inside the motor start switch WP8529896 causing the motor to try and run on both high and low speed windings, causing excess electrical draw and the lights to dim. There is a slight possibility the timer could be at fault, but your post doesn't indicate that at this time.

Sometimes the motor does not start for the spin cycle. When it does, and while it's pumping water out, if one stops the washer with the timer and then immediately restarts it, the motor starts and the spin cycle resumes normally. Sounds like a timer, huh? But it isn't, I tried that. I'm thinking maybe a motor start switch. However, a new motor comes with a new switch, and I would hate to buy a switch and then find out I need a motor. Any ideas?

Hello Robert. It sounds like the clutch 285785 may be bad and not catching to spin the tub. You will need to check the clutch in the unit.

Hello Bob. It sounds like something may be binding in the unit. You will need to disassemble the washer and see if the unit has any parts binding on the unit.

Washer fills, but does not agitate. Drain and spin is fine. When it is supposed to agitate, I do not hear any noise other than the timer ticking. Checked lid switch--works fine. Even tried jumper method to confirm. Pressure switch seems to be fine too--water stops when it is supposed to, and timer runs (I think pressure switch sends power to the timer). Have tried replacing the timer, the speed switch, and then both. Still same symptoms. Checked the voltage of the yellow/white wire when machine is supposed to be agitating--120. Checked voltage of orange wire from speed switch when machine should be agitating--120. Ruled out coupler as the machine spins during the drain. Help!!

Mrpoo, With unit not agitating and only hearing the timer turn then this issue would be a faulty timer. The contact in the timer for the agitation is not making and causing agitation to not work.

Lorraine, You will want to check the hot water valve or check to see if the unit fills with water on the cold setting. It sounds like the hot water valve screen may be clogged or the hot water is not turned on. If these check ok and the water fills on cold water then the most likely cause for the issue would be with the hot water valve is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Kenmore series 90 washer. The washer fills properly but will not agitate, drains and spins properly. Upon start of rinse cyle it will fill and then drain, again with no agitation. Not sure it is performing the last spin cycle in the rinse before stopping. Get a few shots of water like I'm used to seeing, and then continues to the end without spinning the water out it just shot in. I bought a replacement timer (used) and it operates in exact same manner. I also replaced the lid switch because I knew it was bad. The switch had failed electrically quite awhile back as it did not interrupt a spin cycle when the lid was open, and tested closed with an ohmmeter at all times. I am assuming a motor or motor start switch problem because I don't hear any motor sound when unit should start agitating. The coupler is obviously ok and the agitator worked fine when the motor did run in the agitate cycle before. It missed an agitate cycle one time last week, ran 6 more loads with no problem and then the agitate problem came back, permanently. Appreciate your thoughts on this one.

Jeff, With there being no sound when it is supposed to be agitating then it sounds like the issue would more likely be a issue with the timer on the unit not sending power to the motor during agitation.

Hello Carol. You need to check and see if the timer is bad or if the motor is bad in the unit. If the unit spins in other cycles, but not regular, you will need to replace the timer in the unit.

Hello Joe. Make sure the strike is good. If so, check the cold water valve and see if it is not letting in cold water for the rinse cycle.
