For Whirlpool Stand Mixer Phase Control Board (Part Number: OEM18058740)

V

After tripping my electrical outlet, my mixer started acting weird - shifting speeds, only going up to #6 speed (7-10 were the exact same). I read and saw a way to tune my speed so I followed this tutorial: http://www.fixya.com/support/t9656751-speeds_don_39_t_increase_after_6 It didn't feel right, since once tightened, the control plate didn't let the motor run... but I followed the tutorial anyway. When the stir finally started, it was making a terrible noise, but I thought it was because the nut wasn't tightened, so I moved to the next step. Then the mixer just died. I didn't smell anything, so nothing burned out, but no amount of tightening and loosening of the control plate got it to work again. I realize I broke something in the process, but I don't know what... the phase control board? The speed control plate? The governor? I'd rather not spend more on parts than I have to.

V, For the issue that you are having you would need to replace the speed plate and your phase control board.

Joe, If the motor is continuing to run then you will want to check the worm gear for and gears that meet up to the worm gear for damage. Also check to make sure that the planetary is not dropping. If the motor stops running then the phase board would most likely be the cause for the issue.

Charles, Yes, The speed control would be the most likely cause for the unit not speeding up when it gets to a certain point.

Jaquan, The first thing that you will want to check would be the brushes to make sure that they are in good shape with no burn marks from arching. There is a screw on the side that you would take out and this is where the brushed are located. If the brush looks ok then you will want to check the governor and the phase control board for being faulty.

Brian for Model Number KSM150PSER

I'm having trouble narrowing down the part that is going bad in my mixer. It started when under a larger load (mixing dough) and has worsened to light loads like whipping butter. When under a load my mixer will slow down and really work to complete a rotation. If it runs like this for a few minutes it starts to get hot. My initial thought was that it might be a speed sensor (governor?) or the speed control plate. Since it seems to be a little wonky when turning on without a load too. For an experiment I just turned it up to 10 from a stop. (no attachments) It sped up to what sounds like a 6 and hovered between 4-7 for about 10 seconds then crept up to about an 8. It will burst up to nearly full before coming back down and doesn't stay at a constant speed. Then I thought maybe phase control board since one of the questions here sounds similar to what I'm experiencing. Then I thought perhaps motor itself. Any ideas? Thanks! ~Brian

Hello Brian. The information you described leads more toward the motor in the unit. If the boards were bad, the load would not make a difference.

Andy, The winding of the motor could becoming weak which would cause the unit to not have the force or power that it once had. This would require the replacement of the motor.

Hi Don. Different noises are clues to different issues. Example if you hear sparking this means either the armature brushes are just bad, but also the armature has now shorted as well. If you are hearing a different speed increase -vs- load issue then the Phaser board may not be giving the correct voltage output. It is part # WPW10325124. If you are hearing a gear case noise then you need to inspect the gears after cleaning them and see which parts are needing replaced. Thank You.

JD, The W11133634 is the correct part to order for the armature, in your mixxer. If you're sure you had a low resistance reading (with meter on RX1 setting) then you should be fine, as long as you clean and "lightly" lube all the moving parts. Thanks

OhioRob, You're on track, if you find no damaged or loose wires between the control board plate WPW10119326 and armature and brushes, then the phase control WPW10325124 is the most likely issue.
