The Spray Arm Seal is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dishwashers. This seal is responsible for creating a watertight seal between the spray arm and the water supply tube, ensuring that water is directed through the spray arm without leaking.

Causes of a bad spray arm seal include wear and tear over time, exposure to high temperatures or harsh detergents, or physical damage from mishandling or debris.

Symptoms of a bad spray arm seal:

  • Water leaks around the spray arm or in the dishwasher tub
  • Reduced water pressure or inefficient spray coverage
  • Excessive noise or rattling sounds from the spray arm during cycles
  • Premature wear or damage to the spray arm components

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore dishwasher models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Spray Arm Seal (Part Number: OEM18036720)

1 Answer

Rachel, There is some "play" in the spray arm, but not as much as you indicate and it shouldn't "bump or knock against part of the back of the dishwasher." You'll need to remove the tube WPW10323424 supply tube, and arm assembly then check all the components WPW10349488 screw, WP8268433 seal, WPW10082841 spray arm, WPW10082867 mount, etc. for distortion or excess wear and make sure the mount is attached and secured to the rack tines properly. The "how-to videos" attached to the part numbers should be helpful in the teardown procedure and get you back up and running properly. Thanks, for excessive wear or distortion.

John, Open the door and use a mirror, and check the lower door seal WPW10497235 for damage or deterioration, also check the corner barriers W10195837 at the bottom of the door. Check the door hinge, and hinge pins to make sure they aren't bent or damaged. Lastly, loosen or remove the top flange mounting screws, recheck the dishwasher for level, and make sure the door is aligned to the tub, then reattach the top flange screws to the counter top.

Mel for Model Number Whirlpool

Whirlpool Dishwasher not cleaning very well, I don't have the model #, but the 8268433 seal goes on it. I think it's getting enough water, it's hot, both arms spin as does the small white one in the very top. I took both arms off and cleaned the misc debris out and put them back on. It did clean a little better but not like it should. I thought that seal was broken, but I see in the picture, it is supposed to have that space. Any other ideas? Thank You

1 Answer

Hello Mel, First of all, the unit has to be supplied hot water from the home plumbing to make the unit energy efficient. Secondly, the heating circuit in the unit has to raise the water temperature to 140°F in order to produce the chemical reaction from the detergent as it was designed to do. Without this water temperature increase, the unit will only spray water and will not produce a satisfactory wash result. If you could please post a new question and include the model number from your units' I.D. tag, we can look up the wiring diagram for your specific unit to see what components are present that you should test for issues. We will also be able to recommend parts that can be guaranteed to work properly on your unit. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Bruce, A dishwasher pump doesn't produce as much pressure as a faucet and hose but, yes a new seal WP8268433 should improve the rotation of the spray arm. You also want to check the opening in the bottom of the spray arm WPW10082841 to make sure it's not distorted or wallowed out.

Jas, It sounds like the water fill is good and you will want to check to make sure that there is nothing clogging the pump. If the pump checks ok then there may be a diverter motor (depending on the model). This motor may be bad but we would need to have the model number to determine if your unit has this motor.

Hello Jas. Really the only way to tell is if it is broken. Most likely the seal is not the issue. It sounds like the water level is not high enough or the filters in the unit are dirty and need to be cleaned. If the water is low, you will need to replace the water valve WP8531669.

Elaine, Normally if a dishwasher is getting water to the upper spray arm but it is not turning it would have to do with the water pressure getting to the spray arm. Check to make sure that the unit fills with enough water and check inside the pump and tubing to make sure that there is nothing clogging them which would lower water pressure as it pumps.

Tess for Model Number DU 1055X-TPS4

A grinding sound was mentioned above. The first time I ran the dishwasher after it had set for 3 1/2 years it made that sound. We have just replaced the motor /water pump assembly and the heater element. The water level seems to be just at the heater element and the bottom rack is getting cleaned but not the bottom. Additionally, an above question inquired about which type of screwdriver to use to undo the bottom assembly off of the upper wash arm in order to access the seal for the spray arm.

1 Answer

Hello Tess, There are normally two Torx bits needed in the teardown and re-assembly of the dishwasher pump and motor assembly, They are most commonly a T-15 and a T-20. Some models require a T-10. The grinding sound is normally a foreign item in the pump that is contacting the pump impeller. I usually tear it down and use a wet-vac because if you go digging around in there with your bare fingers and it is a glass sliver, you might get to meet some emergency room employees.

Dan, Do you recall any strange "grinding" noises during the previous cycles , especially in the wash portion of the cycle ? If not, check the water level in the bottom of the tub,. after a cycle is started, allow the machine to run 3 to 5 minutes, then unlatch the door , and wait a few seconds. Remove the lower rack and check the water level. The water level should be in contact with the bottom of the heater element(at least) and check the water temperature, it should be at least 120 dgrs. F. at this time. Low water level and low wash water temps. can produce the results you're describing. Good Luck and Thanks

Hello George. Check and see if the water level in the unit is low. If so, it will cause the unit to not wash properly and you will need to replace the water valve WPW10158389. Hope this helps.
