For Whirlpool Washer Short Cam Agitator Repair Kit (Part Number: OEM9283638)

Otis, It should have come apart, just like the video. Your most likely issue is, the clothes mover WP3363003 has seaized to the Thrust washer, and that has seized to the agitator bottom WP3951632. This is a good sign of an overloading issue. You could try separating the two components, but you'll probably incure more damage, and may need a com[plete agitator 285565.

Dennis, There is a slight "wobble" in the clothes mover. It has to be loose, in order to "ratchet" the clothes mover. Any excess wobble in the clothes mover could be due to the thrust washer WP3951608 being worn or damaged.

Michael, The agitator dogs in the cam kit 285809 allows the clothes mover WP3363003 to move in one direction(counterclockwise). The lower agitator, still moves back and forth. If you can turn the clothes mover in both directions then you'll need the cam kit, you also want to rmove the lower agitator and check the splines on the inside of the center opening for damage or white plastic shavingts on the metal output shaft that the agitator is attached to, either of these components will make noise in the agitate cycle if they are "stripped" or loose on the shaft.

Hello Bri. Based on the model number you will order the short cam kit 285809. Some agitators require alot of force to remove the unit from the washer.

Chuck, Hopefully the penetrating oil will help, but don't count on it. You could try tapping down on the socket wrench, while you're turning the wrench counterclockwise. This may help the "break" the loctite and allow you to remove the bolt. Otherwise, you'll need to drill it out, or use a blot extractor as the first attempt. Thanks and Good Luck

Gus for Model Number LA5550XPW3

I have a Whirlpool LA5550XPW3. In a recent answer you indicated that the bottom agitator and the top agitator (filter) snap together and the agitator bolt (I assume you refer to part AP3046456) holds the two items tightly together. That is not possible. Take a look at part AP3046456: you will see that the diameter of the bolt head is much narrower than the inner diameter of AP2906586. Simply put the bolt inside one end of the filter and it will come out at the other end! The question remains: what holds the top agitator and the bottom agitator together? Thanks

1 Answer

Hi Gus. The Agitator top part # WP63753. The agitator bottom half part # 387838. The bolt with washer is part # WP358237. The agitator cap is part # WP3355758. The breakdown only shows all of these parts going together to make up the total assy. You are correct that the bolt goes completely through the top half of the agitator and only bolts the lower half to the transmission. The upper half snaps together as you first align the two half's correctly. There are slots and retainer clips that are internal and the 2-halves align up together. Maybe the bolts washer that also should have the rubber washer is missing and allowing the bolt to fall through. Thank You.

Gus for Model Number LA5550XPW3

I have a Whirlpool LA5550XPW3. Your answer to my previous question was that the agitator for this model only comes as a fully assembled unit (top and bottom agitators together, AP3019581). You also mentioned that one of the only parts available separately is the filter (top agitator, AP2906586). This seems like a contradiction. My bottom agitator works fine and I recently bought the top agitator new. How do the top and bottom agitators connect to one another? Do I sit the top one on the bottom one and press them together? Is there anything else holding them together? Thank you.

1 Answer

Gus, I'm sorry for the confusion. The manufacturer does not offer a cam kit with your appliance however they do offer the agitator as complete assembly 387838 or you can purchase the filter as a separate part as part number WP63753. The bottom agitator and the upper agitator (filter) snap together and the agitator bolts holds the two items tightly together when installed. Hope this information helps you!
