The Spark Module Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges. It is responsible for generating the spark needed to ignite the gas burners on the cooktop. The spark module sends electrical signals to the igniters, creating the spark that lights the gas for cooking.

Over time, the spark module can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or normal wear and tear. When the spark module becomes faulty, it can lead to various problems with igniting the burners.

Symptoms of a bad spark module include:

  • Burners not lighting or taking a long time to light
  • No clicking sound when turning the burner knob
  • Burners only lighting intermittently
  • Visible sparks or arcing from the module

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This part is only compatible with serial numbers starting with 21 and up on model 8351VV.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Spark Module Kit (Part Number: OEM12030111)

Ron M. for Model Number SC8836EB0-3

This is a Whirlpool cooktop. The right front burner igniter does not always produce a spark. The other burners have a spark when the ignite function is selected on any burner. The porcelain on the igniter appears okay and there is pulsing voltage coming through the lead to the burner (can't measure how much). Sometimes if a pan is placed on the left front burner the right front burner seems to light more consistently. However, that is not always the case. I did note that the spark on the burners does not always appear blue but rather orange. Is there possibly a ground problem or is it more likely the spark unit? Or am I going in the wrong direction? Thank You, Ron

Nick for Model Number Majic Chef 8261RW

Thank you so much for the answer. I've been asking how to remove the glass top for a while and you are the first one to give me a straight answer that I have to use a putty knife to unstick the glass. That is great. I'll try that. Looking at the Majic Chef 8261RW parts list, I do plan to order AP4012547 for glass top and AP4012073 for the drip pan. Where do AP4108258 tape and AP205846tape 112", that you suggested, get used? BTW, AP205846 is unavailable on your website. BTW, mine has two and not 3 screws fastening the drip bowl. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Nick. You need to use the foam tape part # WP3191933 under the surrounding glass edges to cushion the glasstop from the counter top and getting the dirt from inside the burner base pan. Thank You.

Hi Nick. It will be the best way is to cut through the old tape part # 12400021. Do not take a chance on prying the glass loose. Do not set the unit upside down as it will break the glass part # 12001366 which is no longer available. Thank you.

Hi Nick. On a unit this old, it's do able, chances are you're going to need some additional burner parts and whichever switches or wires you find damaged/shorted out. Basically, you're going to need to remove the burner knobs, grates and caps. You will then need to remove the three(3) small phillips head screws holding the burner drip pan to the burner base(the screws will probably snap off), you can then lift the glass top off the burner box(you will probably need a putty knife to help unstick the glass). Lift the glass off and you'll have access to all the ignition switches , ignition wiring and spark module 12001596 You may want to order more than 1 (one) switch in case, AP4089539 screws, at least 12 of those and both glass seals 8270P088-60 and 12400021, 12400008 It sounds worse than it is, its actually a pretty simple & easy repair. Thank You.

Luis, When you turn on any top burner on a gas range, All the top burner igniters will spark, Only the gas burner that you have selected will ignite and have a flame. This is a safety feature designed into the spark module and control system, and sounds like all is working proper. Thanks and Good Luck

KP, The other possibilities could be, moisture on the ignition switchs or igniter wires, due to a spill over or water droplets when cleaning the range. you could unplug the power cord for a day or two so the sparking stops and give the system time to dry out, remove the burner knobs and use a blow dryer to dry out the switches. otherwise, you may have loss the ground circuit to the range at the outlet. If all's OK, then check the igniter switches for an "open" circuit when the switches are in the OFF position with a multimeter, if all show infinite (no) resistance, replace the spark module 8215557. Thanks and Good Luck

Jason, You're on track and target. The most common issue with shorted burner valve ignition switches, is boil overs and spillage or exessive water when cleaning the appliance. As long as there is 120 VAC power supplied to the cooktop, the ignition switches are "hot" and will short, if moisture is allowed to enter the assembly. You'll be fine once you get the WP74007696 and the 8215557 . Thanks and Good Luck

Sharon F. for Model Number MGC6430BDW Maytag Gas on Glass Cooktop

Cooktop has been working fine since 2007 install. Never turned gas supply off or unplugged from outlet since 2007 until yesterday (10-11-11). Gas supply was turned off and unplugged from outlet as safety precaution along with all gas appliances in house since I was having work done to main gas supply coming into house. I turned gas back on and plugged into outlet..now all four spark igniters on cooktop will not click. I checked breaker panel and checked outlet for power. These are fine. Now I am stumped. Can you help? Thanks.
