The Micro Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators that is responsible for controlling the ice and water dispenser. The switch operates by responding to mechanical actions, like the pressing of the dispenser paddle or button to open or close to allow water and ice to be dispensed.

Symptoms of a bad Micro Switch include:

  • The ice or water dispenser not functioning
  • Intermittent operation of the dispenser
  • Stuck dispenser preventing ice or water from stopping

Causes of a bad Micro Switch can include physical damage from heavy use, wear and tear over time, or electrical issues such as short circuits that impair the switch's function.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

AALA, For this issue, the most likely cause would be a water valve that is sticking open causing the water to not shut off properly.

Jack, The dispenser on the unit would not drip due to a switch that is faulty. This would most likely be caused by air in the water line from changing the filter or water valve that is seeping. You could correct this dripping issue with a check valve 8201815. This check valve will connect to the water line at the bottom of the freezer door.

Minh, You will want to check the wiring harness at the top of the left door hinge. A loose or damaged connection would be the most likely cause of this issue.

Aaron for Model Number KSSC42QKS01

My water dispenser fails in the open position and must move back and forth to get water to stop flowing. Assume it is a bad dispenser switch as indicated by your page. However, the video to get the front panel off does not apply to my unit. It is a Stainless Kitchen Aide. I have put putty knife all around the dispenser panel and see no way to release it. Only other way I see in is to remove all of the perimeter screws but I am not going to do that unless I know it is the path forward and risk damaging the unit.

Aaron, I sent you an email showing how to access the switch. Be careful not to break the switch holder when removing the switch.

Shari, It is not likely that the switch is faulty but the bracket that the switch will sit on would be the most likely cause for this. The part number you would need is W10728484.

Mark, You will want to disconnect the tube at the bottom of the door and check to see if water comes from the water line coming from under the unit. if there is then the door water line is frozen and will need to be thawed. If there is not then the issue will most likely be a frozen water reservoir in the refrigerator compartment.

Andy, This would be more likely the water valve that is faulty rather than the microswitch on the dispenser. The water valve is part number W10853654.

Bob, In the middle of the control panel there is a button for the lock and a button for the unlock, Try to push the unlock button and see if this corrects the issue. If this does not correct the issue then check the wire harness at the bottom of the door to make sure that there is no damage to the wiring. For this type of issue it would be unlikely the switches but another source causing this issue and these are the 2 main causes.

Gwen, You would simply disconnect the wiring from the switches and to remove the switch you would lift up on the pins on the outer parts of the switch and slide switch out.
