The Thrust Washer is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines, specifically designed to reduce friction between the moving parts of the washer's transmission system. This small but crucial component is placed between the rotating and stationary parts, allowing for smooth movement and preventing wear and tear on the transmission.

Causes for a Thrust Washer to fail include regular wear and tear from the mechanical stress of washing cycles, improper alignment or installation that can lead to uneven wear, and the accumulation of debris or corrosion that can interfere with its function.

Symptoms of a bad Thrust Washer include:

  • The washing machine makes unusual noises during operation
  • The washer struggles to switch between cycles or fails to spin at the correct speed.
  • Increased vibration or shaking of the washing machine

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thrust Washer (Part Number: OEM9283398)

1 Answer

Benize, if the flat round part was found after removing the agitator, it would likely be the spanner nut WP21366. If this is the part that has split in half, it would need to be replaced.

Joe, You will want to pull the inner tub from the unit and check the drive block which could be slipping and causing the grinding noise.

Jen Evans for Model Number MTW5740TQ0 Maytag Performa Top Loading

The top half of the agitator popped off a couple of loads ago when pulling some heavy wet towels out of the washer. I thought I put it back properly because I could get it to lock back into place but after every load, the top half would pop back off during removal of the load. I think it was coming loose during the washing cycle. The last time, the Thrust Washer was cracked in several places and covered in a black goop which was different than the last couple of loads. I don't know what I should order. Advice is much appreciated!

Jen, You will want to make sure that the bolt that goes in the center of the agitator from the top. You should only need the thrust washer for the unit to but will need to check the other parts.

John, You may want to order the agitator repair kit 285748 and the Thrust washer 285587. There is an informative video attached to 285748 that will answer all your inquiries. The thrust washer is not "attached" to the lower agitator assembly, there are openings or slots in the agitator that align with the "key ways" on the thrust washer, once installed a small dab od white lithium grease on the top of the washer will help to keep it working for a while.

Phil for Model Number Kenmore model 110.27812690

I have a Kenmore model 110.27812690. The water drains, but it won't spin. It sounds like it is spinning and makes a fast plastic clicking sound. I opened the lid and the tub was stationary. Also, I turned it over and noticed a lot of black rubber dust on the floor. it looks like it is coming from a white cylindrical part with a rubber band around it. This part is located between the gearbox and the electric motor. Also, when I pry the black rubber band up, there are some peices of plastic about the size of tic tacs floating around underneath the band. What are your recommendations?

Hello Tina! If the top agitator is not working as it should you will need to replace the agitator cam repair kit, part number 285811. Thanks!
