The Timer is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This part manages the drying cycle's duration, ensuring clothes are dried efficiently without overuse of energy. It allows users to select the desired cycle time based on the laundry's type and moisture level.

Over time, timers can wear out or malfunction due to electrical issues or mechanical wear and tear. If your dryer isn't advancing through the drying cycle, stops mid-cycle, or fails to start, it might be time to replace the timer.

Symptoms of a bad Timer include:

  • The dryer fails to start
  • The drying cycle doesn't advance or stops mid-cycle
  • Clothes are not dried in the time expected
  • The timer knob doesn't move or is stuck

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer (Part Number: OEM18049620)

1 Answer

Mel, Yes the timer being faulty will cause the dryer to not start. Also the thermal fuse or the door switch would be the other things that would cause the dryer to not work.

Nathan, There are 2 components other than the thermostats which would cause the heating element not to work. First is the motor and second the timer. The best option is to disconnect the power to the unit and access the heating element. Disconnect one wire that is going to the heating element, preferably the one on the thermostat side. Plug the unit back up and using a multimeter you will want to turn the dryer on and test for 120 vac at the terminal on the heater where the wire was disconnected. What this will do is eliminate the heater element itself and the motor. If there is 120 vac at this point then you know the heater is good and the motor is good because the other 120 vac coming through the thermostats is the timer side of the circuit. If there is not 120 vac at that point then you will want to test the other terminal on the heater and check for 120 vac. If there is not 120 vac then the motor would be bad and if there is 120 vac then the heater would be the issue. If there is 120 vac at each point then the heater is faulty.

Mel, You will want to check the timer from t the black on terminal C to the White/Black on terminal T to make sure that there is 120 vac. If there is power there then the issue will most likey be in the timer.

Michael for Model Number AED4475TQ1

Admiral dryer would not start. I turned the timer while holding the start switch and the dryer comes on but only in normal cycle, cool down setting. I used a multimeter to test the thermal fuse, heat element assembly, cycling thermostat and I checked the start switch. All checked out good. I'm not sold on the timer being bad because it seems to be the last part to check while troubleshooting but it's all that is left. Am I missing something? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Pablo, The unit shutting off after about 5 minutes but the timer still advancing, you will want to check the unit for overheating motor. This type of thing could be from rollers that are dragging or anything that could cause a drag on the motor. Also check the venting to make sure that it is clean and clear.

Roderick, The timer is a possibility, but it's more likely to be a fault in the heater element or thermal fuse located in the back of the dryer. If you can get us a proper model number, we can supply you with proper testing procedures and parts information.

Hello Tim, As long a s the temperature switch is operating properly and there are no harness or connection issues, the most likely issue is a quick cycling thermostat. It is possible for the problem to be caused by the exhaust ducting and/or the timer. I would suspect the timer last though as it is not one of the more common issues.

Hello Doug, You should verify the cycling thermostat WP694674 and the wiring between L1 and neutral through the timer motor. The cycling thermostat and wiring harness are the only two things in this circuit besides the timer. As a note, the original part has been discontinued and this adjustable thermostat is listed as a satisfactory substitution. It would need to be set on 140°F when installed to produce satisfactory results.

Mike for Model Number Admiral Dryer Model AED4475TQ1

The unit would run but wouldn't heat up. On top of that the unit wouldn't cycle, the timer would just sit idle and the dryer would just continue to run until we manually shut it down. I read through your site, seen others with similar issues and it all pointed to a new timer. I threw down my credit card and purchased one from your site. Overjoyed that it arrived today so we can finally dry our clothes in a timely manner. Those emotions were quickly squashed once the new timer was installed. No Heat, no timer movement. What now?

Hello Mike, This sounds more like a centrifugal switch that a timer issue. This is a switch inside the motor 279827 that turns off the heater if the fan is not circulating air, (protects the heating element).
