The problem was that the motor coupler & shaft had a tiny bit of rust at their union. With the weight of the ice bin it rusted in the lowest position. This didn't allow the motor coupler to float on the shaft. There is a spring inside the shaft that pushes up on the motor coupler keeping it engaged in the ice bin coupler above. I determined my thermostat was defective, ordered the thermostat which arrived in two days and I replaced the thermostat and I now have a full bin of ice !!! Removed the back cover to access the fan area. Clean the area with brush and vac first. Unplugged the Refrigerator. Used a socket set with 1/4" socket. Had an extended and a standard socket. Removed the condensate plastic drain from the bottom of the refrigerator to have more access to the fan. Unplugged the fan motor. Removed the two screws holding the fan in place. This is a two person job - one to remove the top hinge and replace the handle, while a second person holds the refrigerator door in place. Replacing the handle was easy. Dropped light panel by removing two screws with socket set. Unplugged two terminals and unclipped the light socket from the base. Then just clipped the new socket onto the base, plugged the connectors onto the terminals and remounted the base. Total job was less than 15 minutes. Read more

After checking the suggested fixes and parts on Appliance Parts Pros, I ordered the defrost thermostat and evap motor for my refrigerator, a Kitchen Aid KSSC42QTS00. Installation was very easy, simply emptying the freezer and removing the access panel in the back bottom half. Upon getting everything open, I found out that the existing evap motor was working fine, so I didn't install that part. I did install the defrost thermometer, which was a 5-minute process.
