The Gear is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool stand mixers. Located inside the mixer head assembly, it transfers torque from the motor into rotary spinning of mixing attachments. Thorough blending and kneading depend on dependable gear movement.
Causes of gear failure include wear from extended use breaking down teeth, accumulated residue gumming up meshing parts, or impacts damaging vital cogs.
Symptoms include:
- Attachments failing to spin or rotating unevenly
- Grating sounds emanating from within the mixer
- Ingredients not fully incorporated as intended
This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

2001 vintage kitchenaid professional 6 mixer suddenly starting knocking badly and then seized up Richard R. • Honolulu , HI • April 01, 2017
Opened up transmission housing and removed all gearing to inspect for worn parts. The Professional 6 is all metal (except for the transmission housing cover) so just a couple of gears looked worn. Planetary needed adjustment, although the gearing was solid. Replaced the transmission housing cover with a new metal version. Cleaned out the old grease (all that grease...) and repacked the gears. Closed it up, ran it for 30 minutes to set in the new grease, and everything sounds smooth and...

Our kitchenaid mixer speed control lever plastic knob decided to crack Brent B. • Centerville , UT • November 24, 2014
After ordering the speed lever, I watched one of the videos about disassembling the mixer. I followed the instructions pretty much to the letter except I found I spent more time cleaning and air dusting around the motor to get the accumulated flour dust out. The insides of the mixer haven't been touched in 30 years. About the most difficult part of disassembly was the 4 screws holding the mixer head to the stationary base. these screws have beveled cuts designed to lock the screws in place, I...

The Pinion Gear is an OEM replacement part specific to KitchenAid stand mixers. It is a small gear located within the planetary mixing mechanism. The pinion gear works with the worm gear to power the planetary action that thoroughly mixes ingredients.
Symptoms of a bad pinion gear include:
- Uneven or incomplete mixing
- The mixing arm assembly failing to spin properly
- Grinding noises coming from the base of the mixer
- “Skipping” while under a load
Causes of a bad pinion gear can include cracked, worn, or broken teeth from heavy use over time. Food debris or other obstructions around the gear can damage it as well.
This OEM KitchenAid replacement is compatible with additional stand mixer models from brands like Kenmore, some Whirlpool, and Maytag mixers.

The worm follower gear was stripped on our Kitchen Aid pro mixer. Bao B. • Fullerton , CA • May 26, 2020
We took out all of the parts and wiped them down to remove all of the old grease. The parts were reassembled with the new worm follower gear and added new grease. We had a problem because the new worm follower gear didn't slide down all the way easily, so we had to use a rubber mallet to get it all the way down the planetary shaft.
