All's well that ends well, but the getting there was a bit of a pain. The web site suggests 3 possible causes for my problem (incl. the burning smell). I began with the first two since they were inexpensive compared to the motor, which was the third cause (and also the least often cause). There is no way to visibly tell if the motor is bad or not. Checked thermal fuse, belt pulley switch, door switch, and motor windings (primary 2.3 ohms start 2,2 ohms). Called Appliance Pros, told them my problem. They said that it appears to be the motor even though the ohm readings seam Ok and that I could return the motor if it was not the problem. I ordred the motor and blower wheel. Installed the new motor and everything worked! The only difficult part was that the motor blower had to be chiseled out. Their motor repair video was a great help. Read more

This was a Maytag DE312 actually a Whirlpool labeled as Maytag) and is 27 years old. Replaced motor, drive belt and drum rollers. One tricky part was the motor because the new motor comes with integral starter and it was necessary to cut off existing female spade connectors on some wires and crimp on new connectors. Saw a video on line. Looked fairly easy to replace, but there were quite a few steps. I followed the video step for step and had the motor out in less than an hour. Tested motor with an electrical tester, just to be sure that was the problem. I ordered the motor from Appliance Parts Pros on a Sunday evening. The motor was at my doorstep Tuesday morning. After watching the how to video twice I decided to embark on dismantling my dryer and attempting to replace my motor. After realizing that the main tool needed was a Phillips screwdriver I was sure I could handle this repair. One by one I took apart the dryer and spread out the parts throughout my mud room. 1.5 hrs later and I have a working dryer, and most of all a happy wife. I used the internet and checked a dry fuse, and it tested ok. Checked the start switch, ok. So it had to be the motor. Sharon at the company agreed. Motor, and belt arrive very fast. ordered the belt because, if I had it apart why not change it. Internet also helped get the dryer apart.
