The function of an idler spring on a snowblower is to secure tension on its drive belt.The idler spring of a snowblower might have to be replaced if there is damage that loosens the tension of the spring and prevents the spring from holding components in place. Damage to the idler spring can manifest from long-term use, overexposure, or a collision with a hard object. If the idler spring is subject to damage that results in the loosening tension of the idler arm, the idler spring should be immediately removed and replaced, and the snowblower should not be used again until a new idler spring has been installed.
