I attempted to diagnose the four thermostats/thermal switches in the microwave....two right behind the control panel, one on top of the cooking cabin, and one under a metal shroud above the magnetron. While checking continuity with a voltmeter, i questioned one of them behind the control panel and the one above the magnetron. I then noticed a burn mark on the plastic connector sleeve for the one above the magnetron. I took a scrap piece of 14 gage copper wire and beat the ends flat with a... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Oven had a burnt out hidden bake element and was not heating properly   Christopher A. • Auburn , AL • April 23, 2017

Following the instructions that I received through the helpful research of the APP staff, I disconnected the power, disassembled the back of the oven, and accessed the hidden element. This involved bending parts of the sheet metal and cutting the insulation, so I was very apprehensive about doing this. Once I exposed the compartment that contains the element, I had difficulty extracting the old part and was really nervous about pulling hard to extract it - until I saw the damaged element. It... Whirlpool Microwave Overheat Thermostat

Microwave won't turn on or has no display? The overheat thermostat often fails and cuts power as a safety feature. DIY fix in about 10 minutes.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Umc5200bas06 model microwave no power (would not turn on and no clock display)   Stephen L. • Corpus Christi , TX • February 11, 2015

Removed microwave from the built in cabinet (probably the hardest part) and took off top cover (screws on side and back). Had previously blown the power fuse 2 times in this microwave, so I checked the fuse first using an ohmmeter. This time fuse was good. Traced the power wires around to top side of microwave and saw the overheat "therm" switch. I believe the therm is installed there as a safety feature to open the power circuit to the microwave in case something was to overheat for any... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You No heat from either broil or bake   Nicholas W. • Twin Peaks , CA • October 21, 2018

Started with checking temp control in the oven. Worked fine. Next was testing high limiter switch. Every place stated switch was on the back panel, found mine place under the right burner cartridge. Took some finagling to expose it. Bought a new one, two wires to disconnect along with two small screws to secure switch, slapped it in and I was in business. Oven that was out of commission for over two weeks (never buy a part from Sears, always deal with APP's!) was on the road again! Read more

If your oven won't heat past 250°F or stops heating completely, the high-limit thermostat may have failed. This safety switch is a moderate DIY fix.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Older maytag oven would not heat up past 250 degrees   John T. • American Fork , UT • March 17, 2020

The same thing happened about two years ago and when I took off the back cover, the high limit switch was melted and crumbling, so I replaced it and it's worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. We smelled a stinky electrical burning smell a couple of times and then it stopped heating past 250 degrees. Turns out the high limit switch was crumbling again. This time I replaced both the high limit switch and the bottom element and it heats up again like it should to any temperature. One of the... Read more
