This sprocket has six teeth which engage the chain of the saw. As the sprocket turns, so too does the chain. It connects to the sprocket drum bearing. The retaining washer provides a barrier between these parts, all of which are held in place by the C-clip. If a sprocket comes out of alignment, it can quickly degrade to the point that the teeth no longer engage the chain and may even break off. Should this happen, the sprocket will appear to spin but the chain will not move.
