How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3885081 / 8201786 Compressor Starting Device Kit

1. I got on line and diagnosed the probable problem and watched a youtube video on removing and replacing that particular part 2. I removed the suspected part and found that it was indeed damaged. 3. I went on line and shopped for parts. Appliance Parts Pros had the best price. 4. I ordered the parts Saturday and received the parts on Wednesday. 5. It took me 10 minutes from opening parts box to a running refrigerator 

Installed a new capacitor and compressor relay 

Replaced Start relay and capacitor 

Replaced the Starter on the compressor. Also replaced the capacitor as well for the extra $ 10 in the event that this was having issues as well. 

Some online research indicated the compressor starting device was the most likely culprit. I found the cost, about 54.00 including shipping, to be a reasonable gamble. The video accompanying the part page on the web site was very helpful. The part arrived on time with easy to follow instructions. The appliance is working great. 

Measured voltage at relay contacts and saw 120VAC. Replaced relay still did not start. Check voltage again at relay leads and found 0VAC. Checked voltage at control board and found 120VAC at the appropriate contacts. Pulled on power lead and found a mouse or squirrel had eaten through the wire. It probably made intermittent contact when I measured the voltage the first time. Stripped wire and made telephone splice. Soldered splice and used shrink tubing to insulate it. Live and learn. 

Replaced relay 

Wiggled the thermostat knob and the compressor came back on. Lead me to believe the Cold Control unit was faulty. Chose to replace both ends: New Thermostat, Run Capacitor, and Compressor start kit. Worked well except some of the part numbers need to be cross-referenced online as some get upgraded with a new part number. The instructions/labels don't reflect the new part numbers. Eventually, everything worked out fine! 

Saw a youtube video, AppliancePartsPros.com had for the part. Bought the part, followed their video, and it was easy. 

Put in a new compressor starting kit.
