The Temperature Sensor is an OEM replacement part for GE refrigerators, designed to accurately monitor and relay the temperature inside the refrigerator and freezer compartments to the electronic control board. By detecting the slightest changes in internal temperature, the sensor allows the control board to make real-time adjustments to the cooling system, activating the compressor and fans as needed to maintain optimal conditions for food preservation.

Over time, the temperature sensor can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or general wear and tear. A malfunctioning sensor can lead to improper temperature regulation, affecting the efficiency of the refrigerator and the freshness of stored food.

Symptoms of a bad Temperature Sensor include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer not maintaining the set temperature
  • The appliance running continuously or more frequently than normal
  • Inaccurate temperature readings displayed

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

For Ge Temperature Sensor (Part Number: OEM9556230)

Matteo for Model Number GE GSH22JFTAWW

I am having a problem with my refrigerator. The freezer doesn't seem to hold temperature. It's set on 5 on the display and the temperature was on 0*F most of the time but lately, it goes up to 15°F to 20*F. The ice cubes are frozen together and I can see ice cream containers not as cold as usual. A technician came today but didn't do much. He just told me it is probably the motherboard or sensor. Could it be the sensor or the main board? Thanks

Hello Matteo, This can be an issue with the temperature sensors WR55X10025 or the main board WR55X10942C but the main board should not be considered unless the sensors have been tested first. Also, make sure the fans are running at full speed and the frost pattern is good.

Rob, You will want to go to the main control board and test at the J4 connector from the red to black wire and see if there is 12vdc. If there is not then this will be a main control board issue. The control board part number will be WR55X10942C.

Robert, the temperature sensor in the refrigerator section is located in the back left, about 8 inches from the top of the cabinet. You will need to remove the shelf and use a 1/4 inch nut driver to access the cover.

Joe, This issue would normally be caused by a sticking defrost timer since the timer is designed for 30 min run time and it is sticking at the final part of the cycle. You could have gotten a faulty timer for the unit. This would be the most likely cause for this issue.

Joe, you have a mechanical defrost timer that puts the unit into defrost about every 8 hrs. There is a defrost bi-metal that will terminate the circuit to the heater so that it does not overheat. As long as the timer and bi-metal are operating properly I would not be concerned.

Carolina, You will want to double check installation of the heaer and the defrost thermistor. These would be the most likely cause for no cool defrost issue.

Hello John, You should first check for a frost build-up on the back wall of the freezer compartment. This would indicate a defrost issue. There is one temperature sensor located in the fresh food compartment behind the louvered sensor cover. Some are located in a hidden cover at the top of the shelf track. This is normally located about halfway up the fresh food wall. There will be a sensor in the freezer at the top right of the evaporator cover and there is one in the evaporator compartment where the Freon lines come into the back wall. There is a video showing the sensors in a GE unit on the page for WR55X10025.

Hello Rosa, You should see the temperature sensor cover WR02X13224 in the fresh food compartment on the wall near the middle of the unit. The temperature sensor is located under this louvered grille cover and it should snap from the fresh food wall to expose the sensor WR55X10025 underneath.

Hello Kevin. You will need to order WR55X10025 for the thermistor for your model number. It senses the temp in the fresh food section. Thank you.

Mark, You would want to check the sensor for a resistance of 42.2K ohms at room temperature. If this checks ok then the control board will be the issue.
