Charlie, Sounds more like the drive block is worn WP389140 or tub nut is loose WP21366, Hopefully the drive tube tabs aren't damaged W10820043 Once you remove the agitator, and attempt to loosen and remove the spanner nut,You can tell if the block is stripped/worn out. As for replacing the brake shoes, clutch, and drive tube. Here's a post from the APP Repair Forum, that should answer most of your questions. Ed, First check and make sure the washer is level in both directionss, and as close to the floor as possible and the levelling leg nuts are locked in place, and the rear self levelling/locking legs are locked in place. To access and remove the tub balance ring, you'll need to, flip the control panel up, remove the cabinet, then unsnap the tub cover clips and set it aside. You may need a screwdriver to carefully release the plastic tabs that hold the ring to the openings in the inner basket. Once you have it removed, you want to check for any hairline cracks in the assembly, and if you shake the ring, you should hear and feel a water "sloshing" noise. if the ring is OK. Thanks
