Symptoms of a bad Ice Maker include:

  • No ice production or very slow ice production
  • Ice cubes that are smaller or larger than normal
  • Ice that tastes odd or smells bad
  • Loud noises during the ice-making process

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Ice Maker Assembly (Part Number: OEM18079050)

Brian, Get the icemaker to cycle and test to make sure that there is 120 vac to the water valve. If the water valve is getting voltage to it then yes it is possible for the water line to be frozen but would be more likely an issue with the water valve.

Don, It would be recommended to get the tech sheet from under the unit and put it into service diagnostic to test the icemaker operation. This issue could be a frozen fill tube a faulty emitter or receiver board or the water valve. The diagnostics will help with this.

Don, Check and make sure the temperature is below 8°F. If the temperature is good, place the unit into the service mode (instructions are on the tech sheet packaged with the refrigerator) and check for faults or error codes. Also, if the water valve is good and the temperatures and you have power to the icemaker then you will likely have an icemaker issue and it would need to be replaced.

Mark, it is recommended that the freezer temperature is verified with a thermometer to identify that it is reaching the set temperature. If it is, the failure would be in the ice maker W10873791.

Andy, it would be recommended that the water going to the ice maker is inspected to ensure it is properly filling, and that the temperature of the freezer is checked with a thermometer to ensure it is accurate to what the setting is. If the temperature is good and the ice maker does not fill for 15 seconds, the failure would be in the main control W11035841. If the ice maker does fill for 15 seconds and harvests ice that are partially frozen, the failure would most likely be in the ice maker W10873791.

Celeste for Model Number WRS555SIHZ00

Our icemaker has stopped making ice. We've adjusted the freezer temp up and down, giving it 48 hours between adjustments. We can dispense water with no issues, but no ice. Trying to troubleshoot, I took a hairdryer on cool setting and hit the icemaker for around 5 minutes, thinking it may have just been a frozen line, frozen sensor arm, or something simple. It produced ice after this, and continued for a couple cycles, then stopped again. Now the only time it produces ice is if I use the blowdryer, and then it will produce one or two cycles of ice and stop again. Is this something we can fix by replacing the icemaker or is there another issue going on that won't be fixed by replacing the icemaker?

1 Answer

Celeste, It sounds likely that the fill tube may be frozen, in which case this would most likely be caused by a faulty water valve. The reason for the water valve being the issue is that it is not closing all the way and allowing water to seep through and cause the fill tube to freeze up.

Tim, You could access the wiring at both ends and do a end to end continuity test.
