The Ice Maker is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It automates the ice production within the freezer, providing a steady and reliable supply of ice cubes.

Causes of a bad Ice Maker can include malfunctioning water valves, clogged filter systems, or issues with the thermostat that affect ice production. Additionally, mechanical failures in the ice ejector arms or the heating mechanism that releases the ice can prevent proper functioning.

Symptoms of a bad Ice Maker include:

  • No ice production or very slow ice production
  • Ice cubes that are smaller or larger than normal
  • Ice that tastes odd or smells bad
  • Loud noises during the ice-making process

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Ice Maker Assembly (Part Number: OEM18079050)

Tim, both switches can be tested for continuity. The bin switch would be tested directly at the part from terminal to terminal while the rocker arm is pressed in. It should have continuity. The on/off switch should have continuity when testing from terminal to terminal and it is in the on position. Both parts would be tested only when the refrigerator power cord is unplugged so that there is not voltage being applied to them. The continuity setting of a meter will look like a dot followed by three parenthesis. For example, ·(((

Tim, it would be recommended that the temperature in the freezer is tested by placing a thermometer into water and allowing it to sit for 24 hours. If the temperature is not less than 10°F, the ice maker will not harvest ice. If it is reaching less than 10°F, the next step would be identifying if there is a broken wire at the door hinge. If good, the bin switch would need to be tested for continuity when pressed as it should have continuity at that time. If good, the failure would likely be in the ice maker W10873791.

I noticed when running the 45 test the tray does not stop at level. It continues to rotate past level another 15 degrees or so and then it stops but sounds like it is still trying to rotate. If I release bucket switch (and remove power) the tray backs up a bit. All the wires look fine. The fact that it is running the harvest cycle does indicate it is getting the required power correct? Anything else I can check other than all the wires? Could it possibly be the valve that sends the water to the ice maker? Is there a way to check this valve?

1 Answer

Jeff, Yes, the unit is getting proper power to the icemaker module that is allowing it to turn. If the icemaker is not making ice then check to make sure that there is power getting to the water valve when the icemaker cycles. If there is but no water coming in then it would be a faulty valve.

Hello Jeff, the 01 reading in test 45 for ice maker fill indicates the main control board has not detected the flex tray of the ice maker has fully rotated back to the "home position" which is level, to be able to accept the water fill, since you found a wire broken and repaired it there may be another wire problem, suggest you access the ice maker and lower freezer door hinge and check the ice maker wire harness wires end to end for continuity and possible short to ground next. If no power to ice maker after a test unplug the ref from power for a minute to reset the control board timer,, it is designed to cut power to the ice maker after a harvest for a short time to prevent a possible double water fill.

Jeff, it would be recommended that the wires at the hinge of the door are inspected for any broken or bare wires that could be causing this issue.

Bill for Model Number WRS571CIDM01

The ice maker on my daughter's refrigerator has quit working. .At first it was making noise (kind of a grinding noise) but after a couple days it quit entirely. I suspect the ice maker has gone bad. My question is can I take the old ice maker out to verify something in it is broken / stripped and if so can I leave it out (with the ice maker turned off) and continue using the appliance while waiting for the new ice maker to arrive. Also do you have any specific instructions for ice maker replacement on this model WRS571CIDM01 . Thanks. Bill

Michael, This icemaker arm is supposed to stay in the up position and the only time the arm will drop is during the harvest cycle. You will want to get the tech sheet from behind the kickplate and on there will be diagnostics for the icemaker. The emitter or receiver board will be the most likely cause for this issue.

Mark for Model Number KRSC503ESS00

I have owned this KitchenAid model for 5 years now and recently the tray for the ice maker has been getting knocked off the motor that turns the tray for dumping the ice into the bin. When this happens it causes water to leak out of the chute for the ice to dump when you press the ice pad on the door. I have been able to disassemble the unit and reinstall the tray, which stays put for a few days and then for some reason gets knocked out of place again. I am looking to replace the whole ice maker assembly in hopes this solves the issue.

Hello Mark, You will have to replace the complete icemaker assembly W10873791 since the ice tray is not listed as an available replacement part.
