The Drain Pump Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is responsible for efficiently removing water from the washer's tub during the drain cycle. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that the washing machine operates smoothly by pumping out dirty water, thereby preparing the machine for the rinse and spin cycles.

Over time, drain pumps can become clogged or fail due to debris build-up, wear and tear from regular use, or electrical malfunctions. When the drain pump is compromised, it can lead to water drainage issues, affecting the overall performance of the washing machine.

Symptoms of a bad drain pump assembly include:

  • Water not draining from the washer
  • Unusual noises such as grinding or humming during the drain cycle
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle or displaying error codes related to drainage
  • Visible leaks from the pump area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Sam, This pump WP35-6465 was the original production pump. There was a re-designed and upgraded pump released several years ago. You may want to order and try the WP35-6780 revised pump.

Walt for Model Number MAV5000AWW

The spin cycles seem to work OK except when the cycles are finished the clothes are still sopping wet. The transmission had been replaced 2 years ago and every thing worked fine for a year until the spin cycle started acting up several months ago. Now it is worse. As I had previously stated the clothes are sopping wet after any one of the three spin cycles. Can the problem be attributed to a bad pump as well as the belt. Also, is there a belt tensioner built into the pump to keep the belt tight? Thanks for your advice.

Walt, There is not a belt tensioner. The way the belt wraps around the pulleys keeps it tight. You will want to check the pump for obstructions as this could most certainly cause the issue.

Hello Doug. Most of the agitating noise comes from the brake slipping on these models. If that is where the noise is coming from, you will need to order and replace the brake WP35-6714, stator WP35-6918, and snubber WP21002026 on the unit.

Jerry, You're on track, your first check should be at the drain pump. Raise the washer top panel, using a putty knife to press in on the spring clips in the seam between the top panel and front panel. Remove the two hex head screws holding the front panel to the washer crossmemeber and remove the panel. Select the final spin and drain and start the washer. If the noise is not from the drain pump WP35-6465 then you'll need to check the thrust bearing assembly 12002213 for excess wear or distortion. If distorted or damaged, the clutch and gears won't engage properly and will make noise.

Patti, Are you sure the drain pipe is not clogged and backing up ? If you were soaking clothes for an extended period of time, the tub bearing seal, may have leaked, or perhaps the tub to pump hose has cracked or broke. You'll need to raise the top of the washer using a flat blade tool and press in on the retainer clips laocted in the seam between the top abd front panel. Then remove the front panel and check the hoses. fill the machine with water and check the seal(in the center area of the outer tub) you may want to allow the washer to set for a while(30 to 60 minutes) full of water.

Hal, To replace the part will depend on where it is located in the unit. If located at the back right corner then there is a panel on the back that you remove. Once removed there are 3 screws with 3/8" hex head that you will remove once you have tilted unit back to remove the belt. Once the screws are out and the pump is loose then you will disconnect the hoses. There will be water in the hoses. Install new part and reinstall. The only difference if it is in the front is that you will access from the front by pushing in on the spring clip between the main top and front panel. Once this is done then you would remove the 5'16" screws, there are 2 of them, holding front panel to cabinet. Roll front panel off and remove pump.

Hello Brian, The Drain does have to be elevated almost to the top back of unit. If the drain is not elevated or is shoved too far down into drain pipe it will cause a siphoning effect. Water will just free flow through the unit.
