The Door Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the dishwasher operates only when the door is securely closed. The switch signals the control board that the door is shut, allowing the wash cycle to begin safely.

You should replace the door switch if it becomes faulty or damaged. Causes of a bad door switch can include wear and tear from regular use, electrical issues, or physical damage from forceful closing of the door.

Symptoms of a bad door switch include:

  • The dishwasher not starting or stopping mid-cycle
  • Error codes related to the door latch or door switch
  • The dishwasher operating with the door open (safety issue)
  • No response when pressing the start button

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Door Switch (Part Number: OEM18036891)

Barbara, You'll want to start by checking or replacing the control panel / key pad assembly WP8269819. STUCK KEY: If the control detects that a key is stuck in the depressed position, dishwasher operation will be suspended and the control will flash the light for that key until the condition is corrected. If a key without a light is stuck or multiple keys are stuck, the control will flash the light for the Rinse Only/Quick Rinse key.

Hello Don. The door latch could prevent the unit from starting. However, if you check it and it is good, you will need to replace the control panel on the unit.

I have had my whirlpool - Quiet Partner 3 for 1 year and 4 months( off warranty of course). I also had power outage for 3 hours. The dishwasher would never come back on. I tested main volt coming in. No issues it's 120. I'm trying to sort out the next step. No lights and no power. I have read several reviews to check. One I'm concerned about is the door latch switch, the one on the right tested 120v. The switch on the left was .1 no reading. should that part number 8269209 have the same 120 v current on the test? Do you think this is this issue? thanks

Melissa, You will want to check on the control board for 120 vac between P2 and P6. If there is not 120vac then you want to do a continuity test on the thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse has no continuity then it needs to be replaced. If there is 120 vac to the control board then the control board is bad and needs to be replaced. When checking the door latch, the switch with black wires should have 120 vac and the switch with white should not have voltage as this is the neutral side.

Rich, If theres no 120 VAC to the door switch, you'd have an open thermal fuse 8193762,and or a broken or loose wire between the two components. If you have an "open" thermal fuse, it could be due to a voltage fluctuation in the power supply, a loose connection at the power connections in the junction box. or fault in the heater element or wiring there. You can check for 120 VAC at the door switch and the P2pin6 (blk/wht wire) at the control board to chassis ground. and you can check for 120 VAC at the Tan wire on the P8 terminal to chassis ground, with the door switch "activated". You'll also want to make sure your power supply and connections are properly polarized and grounded in the junction box. We don't see you needing "new one" over a loose or damaged "minor" component.

Hello Gerry. There is no spring used in this latch. The strike WP8580309 presses the actuator WP8524471 down to activate the switches. The unit need to be installed level for this latch assembly to work properly.

Hello, my dishwasher will not start. I have verified it is getting power, first indication was that the Air Dry, Sani Rinse, and Hi Temp Scrub buttons would light up when pressed. None of the Wash options (Pots and Pans, Normal wash, etc) will light up when pressed. I found the reset procedure online, and pressed the Air Dry and Hi Temp Scrub buttons back and forth 5x. At this point all the lights on the control panel lit up, and it went into the 2 minute diagnostic cycle as expected. When that completed, it was still the same as before, it would not start when I press the Start button. Any ideas?

Hello Nathan. Based on the information you provided, the control panel is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Thanks for your answer over on the console assembly page. You recommended look at the switch, I took it off and the metal was in pieces. I touch the wires together and the machine starts! I will order a new switch, question is, how does it work? I don't see how anything would open the switch, its not attached to the moving part of the latch handle, only the plastic posts on the latch assembly. I am worried that I will not put the new one on correctly, so some knowledge would do me some good. Thanks.

Hello Dave. When the door is closed, the latch closes the switch WP8269209, to make the two wires come together and close the circuit.
