The Hi-Limit Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the dryer operates at safe temperatures by cutting off power to the heating element if the dryer overheats. This safety mechanism helps prevent potential fires and damage to the appliance.

Common causes of a bad thermostat include normal wear and tear, exposure to excessive heat, or electrical malfunctions.

Symptoms of a bad hi-limit thermostat include:

  • The dryer not heating
  • The dryer overheating
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during a cycle
  • Longer drying times

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Hi-Limit Thermostat (Part Number: OEM18024927)

1 Answer

Kirk, if there is 240VAC reaching the dryer, with the heating element accessed, the red wire with white stripe can be tested for 120VAC when the timer is set to a timed cycle and dryer not started. If there is 120VAC at this wire, the failure is in the motor 279827. If there is not 120VAC, the thermal cutoff on the element can be tested for 120VAC at the red wire. If voltage is present here, the failure would be in the thermal cut-off 279816. If there is not, the timer WP3976569 would be the cause of failure.

Kirk, Check for 240vac to the dryer. Then in the heating circuit, there's the timer switch, the thermal cut-off, the cycling thermostat, the hi-limit thermostat, and the centrifugal switch.

Tony for Model Number Whirlpool LEC7848DZ0

Hi folks, I got my thermal dryer cutoff kit and everything seems to be in order, but I can't figure out which direction to install the hi-limit thermostat. The video associated with the hi-limit thermostat actually looks like the dryer cycling thermostat, a different part. My hi-limit thermostat will install one way or install rotated 180 degrees, and I don't want to hook up the wrong wire to the wrong terminal. My hi-limit thermostat has no markings on the terminals which is positive or negative...does that mean it doesn't matter which terminals the wires connect to? Please help, and thanks!

1 Answer

Tony, This hi limit switch is a singlepole single throw switch, Power goes in and goes out, as long as the thermostat is "closed" the wiring wont matter. You just need to install it so the terminals are as close to the wiring harness connections as possible. you don't want the wires stretched or too taught.

Margaret for Model Number 110.60942990 & Serial MJ4911833

My Kenmore dryer will run & heat perfectly for approximately 2 to 5 minutes and then buzz and turn off completely. If I immediately restart the dryer, it will only buzz but not start. If I wait 10 to 15 minutes before trying to restart, it will again run for a short time with heat and then shut off again. I have made sure the vent hose is clean & open. What is the problem & which part number do I need? Thank you, Margaret.

1 Answer

Alice, Yes, the factory recommends you replace both the hi limit thermostat and the thermal fuse, if the fuse "blows" and the dryer wont heat. You may want to consider the Dryer Thermal Cut-Off Kit 279816 to repair your dryer. The part is in stock and available at this time. Thanks,
