For Whirlpool Timer (Mechanical Cycle Control) (Part Number: OEM18040557)

Bill for Model Number WTW5550SQ0

Washer was agitating in one direction only. The spin cycle seemed to work fine so I replaced the gearcase. The washer is now agitating properly. At then end of the agitation, the motor stops then after a few seconds the timer clicks once but motor doesn't run for over a minute when the motor starts the gearcase makes a grinding noise, clutch is not spinning, and will not drain or spin without opening and closing lid. After opening and closing lid it starts spinning and draining at the same. I think it should be draining down before the tub starts spinning but I'm not positive. Do I have a timer issue or is there a problem with the new gearcase?

1 Answer

Bill, This would be a neutral drain issue. The neutral drain allows the unit to run the motor without spinning in order to drain the wash tub. The neutral drain is in part of the gearcase.

Hello Keith, first inspect the water valves, lid switch then the motor areas for signs of corrosion, water leakage, wiring problems. if nothing found disconnect the components one at a time till the breaker stops tripping.

Brian, as the drain pump WP3363394 is operated by the motor going into a spin cycle, if the washer goes into spin it would be recommended that the pump is inspected for any clogs as well as the coupling of the pump being inspected for indications of excessively wearing out.

Roger, We would need the model number to pull up a wiring diagram to help you solve this issue. Please post another question with your model number and no personal information.

Hello Robert, If the timer is making a clicking noise, it should be advancing. If not, the timer WP8546681 would need to be replaced.

Washer works but sometimes will not spin between cycles. I have to turn the basket till it stops and then it will spin for that cycle. I was told it was the timer which I replaced and it was not. It is a top load whirlpool WTW5560SQ0. I am trying to be cost efficient here and I need to fix it correctly but I’m at a loss what to replace next. Per the internet it said timer but now I am finding the clutch may be the problem. I’m not sure if that is within my skill set. Single mom who already broke a nail moving the washer. Thanks for your help, Jan

1 Answer

Jan, It will be a mechanical issue rather than an electric issue. I believe the clutch would give you a problem every time it spins rather than sometimes. It sounds more like an internal problem in the gearcase. The clutch simply lets the transmission slip as it starts to spin as it gradually picks up speed. This repair would be more intense but we do have a video on our site under the part number. 3360629

Washer starts to agitate at the beginning of the cycle w/o adding any water. In the spin cycle it does add water during the final spin. The pressure switch # W10339251 and valve # WP8578341 have been replaced but still no water. I read your post about this and recommendations to another customer to change the pressure switch. I've done this for the exact same issue but still have no water. While writing this I noticed after the final spin the timer stopped on "off" then within a minute or two the washer started agitating again in another cycle. Extra Rinse is off by the way. I believe this washer has a bad timer. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Derrick, First check the air tube between the pressure switch and outer tub connection, Make sure it's not pinched, twisted or kinked. Blow into the end of the tube to make sure there is no sediment or debris blocking the air movement in the tube. If all's OK, then check the wiring harness and connections to the control switches and timer, then replace the timer WP8577356. Thanks,

Gary, This issue will most likely be a faulty timer with the unit if you are having to hit the control panel.

Bobby, The most likely cause for this issue would be the pressure hose is either clogged or the pressure switch is faulty. The part number for the pressure switch is W10339251.
