This timer is the appliance's cycle controller. It routes power to the right components in a programmed sequence and advances the cycle at the correct intervals, restoring proper progression and reliable start/stop of functions when the original fails.

  • Advances the machine through each step and duration selected
  • Opens and closes internal contacts to power motors, heaters, and valves as designed
  • Interfaces with the control knob/shaft for user-selected settings
  • Common symptoms: cycle won't advance, timer doesn't move, stuck mid-cycle, or runs indefinitely
What's included: Timer assembly Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; for gas appliances, also shut off the gas supply
  • Note wire locations and transfer one wire at a time to the matching terminals on the new timer
  • Reuse existing mounting hardware and control knob/shaft parts as applicable
  • After installation, run a short test cycle to confirm the timer advances correctly

Hello Al, You will want to check the motor coupling to make sure that it has not broken. A broken motor coupling 285753A will allow fill and drain but no agitate or spin.

Hello Charles, Of course it could be a timer issue, but without troubleshooting the unit, this would be a guess. I would first check the cold water inlet valve. You see, the unit fills with warm water on fill before the wash cycle. If the cold valve isn't working, it would still fill. When you get to the rinse cycle, the unit will fill with cold water only. If this is the case and the cold valve is bad, it will effectively stop at this point. In light of this information, you should check to make sure the cold water valve hasn't been turned off, check for screens in the water supply hoses and clean if necessary, and check the screens in the water valve itself.

Hello Tim, This sounds like it is the timer. The contacts used in the timer for these operations are common from one cycle to the next. I would check the electrical connections to the pressure switch and timer, (just because sometimes you can get lucky and solve an issue with a connection correction).

Alex for Model Number Kenmore 110.23832100 Top Load Washer (Series 80)

The washer will step through the entire cycle, but it will not drain or rinse, (seems to stay stuck in agitate mode), unless we manually stop the cycle at the right time by pushing in the main cycle select knob and then pull it out to restart. It then proceeds correctly. If we let it go, it will finish with sudsy water in the tub. Tried it on a couple of the settings (Ultra Clean, Perm Press) with same results. So, bottom line is that the washer can operate in all modes (fill aagitate, drain rinse fill, spin, etc.) but not automatically as expected. Already replaced the lid switch (just to be sure). Is this a timer or control board issue? Thanks.

Hello Alex, This sounds like the timer WP661649. I can think of nothing else other than the contacts in the timer sticking that would cause this symptom.

Hello Jayne. Yes, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the timer WP661649 is bad and will need to be replaced. Test and see if there is power coming to the timer motor across the two black wires. If so, and the motor does not turn the timer, replace the timer. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
