Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You When the timer was actuated the machine would only hum   Ernest Q. • Geneva , FL • December 11, 2015

Not knowing for sure that the problem was the capacitor, I was reluctant to purchase and replace the part. I went AppliancePartPros.com web site and clicked on the part replacement video. The repair video was short and well illustrated. Before the repair began, the service rep says, " the reason you would replace the capacitor is that after turning the timer on, the machine would just hum." The instruction video was the reason that I purchased the part at AppliancePartPros.com The part was... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Bad capacitor   Jeremy L. • Calera , OK • April 28, 2014

I was actually getting an error code for the shifter and speed sensor. I ordered a shifter, which included the speed sensor, and replaced that part but the washer still didn't work. After doing some more research online, someone mentioned that the capacitor may be bad. After talking to my dad, who is an electrician, he said it sounded like my problem could very well be the capacitor. Knowing that we'd been without a washer for almost two weeks at this point, I went ahead and ordered the... Read more

Roper Capacitor
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: W11158830

This capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to give the appliance's circuit the boost and stability it needs to start and run properly. Replacing a weak or shorted capacitor can restore reliable operation and reduce strain on related components. What it does

  • Provides an energy boost and stabilizes voltage in the designated start/run or power circuit
  • Helps motors or power sections energize smoothly and maintain performance
  • A failing capacitor may cause humming/buzzing, failure to start or heat, intermittent operation, or tripped fuse/breaker
  • May show swelling or signs of overheating around the case or terminals
What's included
  • 1 capacitor
Install notes
  • Disconnect power before service; capacitors can hold a charge—use a proper discharge procedure before handling
  • Note/photograph wire locations; move leads to matching terminals and ensure tight connections
  • Mount securely in the original position; re-use brackets/insulators as applicable and keep wiring clear of sharp edges or heat
  • After replacement, check the related motor or circuit components if symptoms persist

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You A loose hose.   Adrian H. • Dayton , TX • June 30, 2021

I originally thought it to be my capacitor. But after installing the new one my machine still wouldn't wash, upon further inspection the hose that connects to the water level indicator on the control panel had popped a loose. I reconnected it and my washer is working just fine now. So try and do a complete inspection before spending unnecessary money ($125) like I did. Read more

Roper Capacitor (Magnetron)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: W10850446

This magnetron capacitor is the microwave high-voltage capacitor that helps supply the magnetron with the pulse of energy needed to produce heat. Replacing a failing capacitor restores normal heating performance and reduces arcing or loud humming. What it does

  • Stores and releases the high-voltage pulse required by the magnetron so the microwave can generate heat.
  • Prevents unstable magnetron operation that can cause weak or no heating.
  • Common symptoms of a failing capacitor: oven runs but doesn't heat, intermittent heating, loud buzzing/humming, or visible arcing inside the cavity.
  • A failed capacitor can also cause blown internal fuses or tripped circuits.
What's included
  • One capacitor.
Install notes
  • Disconnect power and verify the appliance is completely de-energized before servicing.
  • Capacitors can hold dangerous charge; discharge the capacitor safely with an insulated tool.
  • Use the exact replacement part and follow the appliance service manual for routing and connections.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You My microwave was working at half power   Eric H. • Tonawanda , NY • October 30, 2015

I ordered a new magnetron and a new capacitor and after they arrived I set to work. I took plenty of pictures with my phone to remind me how the components came apart but it was pretty straight forward. Once the new parts were in and everything was reassembled the microwave worked good as new. The repair was less than a third the cost of replacement and no special tools are required. Just be careful to discharge the capacitor. This website is a great resource. Read more
