The freezer door on my 12-yr old GE side-by-side refrigerator/freezer would not stay completely shut resulting in temperature variations and ice buildup from outside humidity seeping into the freezer compartment. After disconnecting power to the fridge, I first removed the ice maker/water dispenser/fridge control faceplate. This easily popped out using a flat head screw driver. Then disconnected the 3 wire harness connections to the control board. I next removed the plastic dispenser housing shield. There's only 4 screws that hold this on. Finally, I removed the Micro-switch, disconnected the two wire connectors and installed the replacement switch and reinstalled everything. The repair took only... Read more

My refrigerator is 13 yrs old and began to build up frost in the ice cube shoot and the water tube began to freeze up over night. The flapper door was not closing completely. First I verified there was good water volume getting to the door, by uncoupling the hose at the door bottom (press in coupler ring) and activating the dispenser, there was not. (have a cup ready) Since the water filter is inline, and I had another I subbed it. Still no change. Here I made an error. I verified the water supply was fine, so jumped to the conclusion it had to be the solenoid operated valve, which it was not. I went on line and read your advice page. Based on that, I removed the damper assembly (six screws counting the miserable light fixture) and found the damper door broken as predicted. I went back to your page and ordered the new part. Nice breakdown to get number. After that, I disassembled the damper assembly, found that the ABS plastic damper had broken from the actuator probably as a result of fatigue from cycling back and forth for twelve years.
