Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Whirlpool washer direct drive motor coupling had gone bad and washer was not spinning or agitating   Aaron P. • Fort Meade , MD • July 26, 2014

My whirlpool washer was no longer spinning, so my first stop was YouTube where I found the video from AppliancePartsPros showing how to replace the motor coupling. In addition to the replacement guide, Matt also shows you how to diagnose the problem by looking for rubber shavings under the washer. Seeing the rubber shavings under the washer, combined with the fact that the washer still drained meant that the motor was still working, so something else in the drive train was bad. I took the... Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washer would fill but then would not agitate or spin there was a burning rubber smell   Karen G. • Katonah , NY • November 28, 2014

All's well that ends well, but the getting there was a bit of a pain. The web site suggests 3 possible causes for my problem (incl. the burning smell). I began with the first two since they were inexpensive compared to the motor, which was the third cause (and also the least often cause). There is no way to visibly tell if the motor is bad or not. After replacing the clutch assembly, which did have some plastic pins broken off) and the motor coupling (which actually looked fine, but the... Read more

Whirlpool Washer Drive Motor
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: W11283592

This washer drive motor is the main component that powers the spin cycle of the appliance. When a washing machine stops spinning or washing, there could be several issues. If the buttons on the control panel are still responsive, most likely it is the drive motor. There could also be a burning smell coming from the washer when the drive motor malfunctions. Using a voltage meter is the only way to show where the problem lies. Unplug the washer and turn off the water supply before starting repairs. Drain all the water from the drain hose into a bucket. Remove the two screws at the base of the front panel, then remove the two screws at the top of the back panel. The top console should be removable at this point, and removing the two screws at the bottom outside corners of the back panel should allow the base to be separated. There are two metal clips attaching the pump to the motor. Unplug the connections from the motor and capacitor. Unscrew the two screws that fasten the motor in, and it should slide out. Reverse these instructions for installation of the new component. This Whirlpool washer drive motor is a genuine OEM replacement part sourced directly from Whirlpool. There are no other parts included with this listing. This part is compatible with Whirlpool and Kenmore appliances.

This part is a genuine OEM replacement drive motor. It is intended to replace a broken or faulty motor in various washers. This motor drives the washing machine, allowing the drum to rotate and agitate when the user selects the desired settings. Over time, the motor might become worn or start to malfunction, requiring immediate replacement. Before starting the repair process, unplug the appliance from the power source and check the resistance running through the motor windings using a multimeter. If the meter measures infinite resistance, the drive motor will definitely need to be replaced. Work gloves should be worn to prevent injury. This part has been made by Whirlpool and has been sourced directly from the manufacturer. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Machine stops between cycles & lid unlocks requires manual cycle movement to finish wash   James K. • Plano , TX • November 29, 2015

This was a tricky one to figure out. The Maytag Centennial MVWC400XW4 would fill and wash, then stop before spin cycle or would not complete the spin cycle. We had to manually move the dial to rinse & spin, etc. to get it to finish a load. This technique worked but it definitely became a pain to do and at the time we didn't notice how much longer the machine took calibrating a wash load. I called Sears initially thinking I really didn't want to mess with this and they came out. They... Read more
