Kenmore / Sears Dryer Igniter

• No heat or not enough heat
• Takes too long to dry

I used Fixya as an initial source describing my problem. I got two responses which were very helpful. One that the "coils" were probably the problem. Two, that the problem could be the thermostat or a thermistor in the dryer. I verified that AC was coming from the timing control, that both the two terminal and three terminal coils,the igniter and shut off thermostat all had continuity. I first ordered a thermostat and ignitor and replaced and that did not work. I asked Appliance Parts Pros their opinion in the chat and they said it was the coils in the gas valve but you had to replace the entire valve as the coils are not sold individually. So i ordered the part and also replaced the thermistor and drum belt while i had the dryer apart anyway! And this fixed the problem! Changed ignitor. Ordered new ignitor by just putting dryer model number in the search box. When I opened the dryer up and took the old one out I was originally upset. The meter read 73 ohms. I was expecting OL (open line). The new one read 273 ohms so I put it in. Dryer works now. The install video’s are old. It was much easier than the video’s showed. Replaced the following parts but did not fix the problem: -Thermister -Thermal fuse -Radiant sensor -Ignitor -Therm The problem was the Centrifugal switch. Took the switch apart and use fine grid sand paper to clean the contacts. Put it back and working. Read more

I looked on Appliance Parts Pros. com and read the problems that others had and replacing the ignitor made sense so I ordered one. It came by UPS within 3 days. I watched the video on how to replace it. Everything went easily, except the screw that held the ignitor in place was a philups head screwdriver and I couldn't get a screwdriver into the small space I had to work in so I went to Harbor Freight Tools and bought an inexpensive 90 degree rachet screwdriver for $2.99 and it worked great.... Frigidaire Gallery gas dryer from maybe 15 years ago. Based on the fact the the smell was only in the dryer, I concluded it must be the gas valve failing to completely seal when closed. After looking at the insides again, I suppose it is possible that it was a connection near the burner, but that stuff had remained untouched for 10 years so I still think I made a good assumption.
