The Sump is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It serves as the central component of the dishwasher's water circulation system, housing the pump and filters. This part collects water during the wash cycle, which is then pumped through the spray arms to clean the dishes. The sump also traps food particles and debris, preventing them from recirculating and ensuring dishes come out clean.
Symptoms of a failing Sump include:
- Poor cleaning performance, with dishes still dirty after a cycle
- Water not draining properly or remaining in the bottom of the dishwasher
- Unusual noises, like grinding or humming, indicating pump issues
- Leaks under the dishwasher due to cracks or seal failures in the sump
Causes of a bad sump often include regular wear and tear, accumulation of hard water deposits, or blockages from large food particles and debris. Additionally, the seals can degrade over time, leading to leaks.
This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Leak at Kitchenaid dishwasher diverter motor. Dan B. • Wentzville , MO • September 10, 2023
Pulling the dishwasher, it was obvious we had a slow leak under it. We had a slow leak from the diverter motor area in the sump. Sure enough, it looked like the gasket around a shaft had to be the culprit.
The gasket was attached to the sump assembly, or the motor. We took a chance and ordered a new sump assembly for a mere $90 and went for it.
All of the trays had to come out. The lower spray arms. Then the distribution runs to the middle rack arms and upper rack arms. Finally, the original...

I found the door switch was not making contact when the door closed. I adjusted it, but then it would not open so the dishwasher would run when the door wasn't closed.
The contacts were too long in the switch so they would bend and stay together when the door opened. The original switch was very poorly made for a very expensive Maytag dishwasher.
