The Shift Actuator is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is an electronic component located inside the transmission that controls the shifting between wash cycles. The shift actuator receives signals from the washer control board to change modes, initiating proper movements to advance the cycle.

Symptoms of a bad shift actuator include:

  • The washer fails to advance through cycles properly
  • Gets stuck in one phase of the wash cycle
  • Makes abnormal noises during operation
  • Does not agitate or spin as expected

Over time, environmental factors and normal wear and tear can cause the shift actuator to malfunction.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This new version of the part features a redesigned black plastic housing with an adapter wire harness. It replaces the older version that came in red plastic. The new part is guaranteed to fit and function like the original.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18044142)

Hello Craig the control board will not supply power to the motor in agitation mode unless the shifter has moved to the correct position to move the splutch to agitation position, likely the shifter WPW10006355 is faulty.

Mr. Lee for Model Number Amana NTW4516FW1

Have 3 year old Amana washing machine. When I run a wash cycle the unit will fill with water, make sounds like it is spinning and agitating and will complete the cycle. When I open the washer the clothes are soaking wet and have not been cleaned. The lid lock light does not light up (and doesn't lock the lid). Washer fills and empty the water. I have run the diagnostic mode several times and it does not return any error codes. When I look at the Fault Display Code, only the sensing fill light will blink with no other indicator lights.

1 Answer

Mr. Lee, based on the information provided, it is likely that the main control W11124710 has failed based on the fact that the lid will not lock. With the lid not locking, it should have given an error code indicating a lock failure. However, it is recommended that the belt WPW10006384, splutch assembly W10721967, and tub nut WP21366 are inspected for anything loose, broken, or excessively worn.

Dan for Model Number ATW4675YQ0

When I turn on my washer it fills with no problem, then, when it advances to the wash cycle and agitates two or three times, then stops. Usually I have messed with it, starting and stopping, shaking, or cancelling and restarting the whole cycle with results. Yesterday I let it keep running hoping it would eventually fix itself, after enough time had passed, about the normal amount of time for the wash cycle, it advanced to the rinse and spin cycles and did the final spin without a problem. What do I need to replace to be able to fix this problem?

1 Answer

Hello Dan, this sounds like the shift actuator may be having a problem, unless the control board sees the correct position of the shifter it may not send power to the drive motor, in either agitation or spin. The shifter is part (AP6014711). Also your model washer came with a Test Sheet giving all testing information, it is located behind the front panel up near the top.

Tim, Check to see if there is power at the control assembly at the j7 connector. If power is going into the board with no action, bad board. W10581552

Hello Joshua, the correct meshing of the splutch teeth is very critical otherwise they will be damaged as you have found out, unfortunately, this problem is caused by the gearcase having an internal problem, the repair would be a new gearcase W11454734.

G.D. for Model Number Maytag MVWC360AW0

I'm looking at the probability of needing to replace the Shift Actuator for this model. SYMPTOM: Wash cycle starts, locks the lid, dispenses trickles of water during SENSING Mode and will not come out of sensing mode (continues with intermittent hums and water trickle for over 10-15 minutes). I then cancel the cycle and then run the DRAIN & SPIN cycle to dispense the water. This process is successful. Does this sound like a SHIFT ACTUATOR problem? If so, does your part come with all replacement directions including any RE-CALIBRATION steps necessary? Thank you

1 Answer

Hello G.D., You should first run the diagnostics to see if there are any fault codes. This will give the best indication of the problem with the unit. The shift actuator does not come with any instructions but the tech sheet explains how to re-calibrate the machine, which should be done anytime an electrical part is replaced on the machine. The tech sheet is in a plastic bag affixed to the inside of the front panel of the cabinet.

April, these items should not impact the water level. If the model number of your appliance could be provided in a new inquiry, this will allow for the most accurate information to be provided.

Bob, It would be best to get the tech sheet from the left front corner inside the cabinet and put the unit into diagnostic mode. Go to the error code mode and see if there are any stored error codes. These codes will guide you with what to check.

Dan, Find the tech sheet located under the top panel front left corner of the cabinet. Two screws in the back of the unit will free the top cover. Raise the top cover lid and all to grab the tech sheet. Follow instructions in the tech sheet to find the error codes and find the meaning of the error code also in the tech sheet. The error code will describe the issue and testing information on certain pages. This is the first step you will need to take.

Ed for Model Number 110.20022011

In Normal Regular setting My washer fills then switches to wash I hear the shift actuator move, it adgitates a few times then stalls. The cycle will complete. It does spin. Entered manual mode and all systems work well. There was a couple of times the gentle adgitation stopped in manual after a minute. Checked all voltages as described in the service manual. All seem ok. The fault indicated an actuator. I have been running it in Heavy duty super and it adgitates fine...The service manual says mother board. Can you help and if i order either of these are they returnable? Also is there a sequence of operation hiarchy chart describing all cycles and their steps? That may help me. Is it possible the knob is out of position? Why does the agitator work on another setting more aggressive setting?

1 Answer

Hello Ed, if any part is installed it is no longer returnable. Going by the symptom and the fault it shows a faulty actuator, the control board will pause power to the drive motor if it does not see the shift actuator in the correct position. The technical data sheet has all testing information. Wash cycle times/operations are variable, based on the control board cycle algorithms.
