The Shift Actuator is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is an electronic component located inside the transmission that controls the shifting between wash cycles. The shift actuator receives signals from the washer control board to change modes, initiating proper movements to advance the cycle.

Symptoms of a bad shift actuator include:

  • The washer fails to advance through cycles properly
  • Gets stuck in one phase of the wash cycle
  • Makes abnormal noises during operation
  • Does not agitate or spin as expected

Over time, environmental factors and normal wear and tear can cause the shift actuator to malfunction.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This new version of the part features a redesigned black plastic housing with an adapter wire harness. It replaces the older version that came in red plastic. The new part is guaranteed to fit and function like the original.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18044142)

1 Answer

Thank you for your question Mason. If there is not an error code identifed in the error retrieval mode, the failure would be in the main conrol W11116590. If there is an error code identified, it would need to be addressed.

Hello Mason, thank you for contacting AppliancePartsPros.com This could be a shifter failure. Diagnostic test mode will need to be run or you may check the resistance of the shifter motor W11481722, which should be about 2k-3.5k ohms.

Rachel for Model Number MVWX500BW0

Wash is ~10yrs old; we have hard water. Last few months we've dealt with washer getting stuck on cycles and not completely spinning out loads. Lid lock seemed to be the issue -- with some jiggling/reopening & closing things would start back up and finish the load w/o problem. Now the washer won't even start. Pushing the button... opening/closing the lid... unplugging the machine... nothing works. Wondering if I should attempt to replace the shift activator or the lid lock assembly first?

1 Answer

Rachel, Use the tech sheet packaged with the machine to put it into diagnostics. If you have trouble placing it into diagnostics, check for power on the board on the J7 connector. You can also use a multimeter to check the lid switch assembly at test #8 on page 18 of the tech sheet.

Charlie Lin for Model Number MVWX700XW2

We have two Maytag Bravos X top-load washers (model MVWX700XW2). One of them started to have trouble a few weeks ago. It stuck in sensing mode and won't move forward through the wash cycle. I tried to unplug the power a couple times, but it didn't help. Then I run self-diagnosis a couple times, and then found error codes of F7E5 (shift actuator or its wiring), F7E6 (drive motor or its wiring), and twice F0E0 (not sure whether it means unknown error or it's fine?). I disconnected power and water and turned washer over, and then checked wire connection to shift actuator and drive motor (by unplugging and plugging back in), which seems OK. Since we have another washer of the same model working perfectly fine, I swapped shift actuator first and then drive motor to learn that both actuators and drive motors are working fine. What could be the problem? Wire connection to the control board? or the control board itself? or could it be due to some other problems (if so, like what parts to check)? I guess I could swap the control board, or any other parts to find out.

Charlie, The F0 E0 would mean no error codes but the other 2 errors you will need to check to make sure that the parts and wiring are good by using the tech sheet to test the parts.

Hello Monique, thank you for contacting APP, There may be something stuck between the inner and out tubs that is causing the noise. I would also tilt the unit back and examine the Splutch W10721967 and Shift Actuator WPW10006355 for any damage and replace as necessary, while you are here check the Belt WPW10006384 for any wear or glazing. If all that looks good, take the belt off and spin the Motor W10832724 and tub by hand to see if you can replicate the noise. If you are unable to find any obvious causes of the noise and the unit will complete cycles properly other than the noise issue, it is likely to be the Main Control W10582042. There is a triac on the control that can open and close very quickly, making a loud squealing or grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from the gearcase area.

PapaDoom, based on the model number provided, a shift actuator would not be used. As this model is a direct drive with a timer, it will utilize a clutch assembly 285785 and would not require any calibration.

Clark, Check the lower belt pulley to make sure it is tight and not hitting the cover.

David for Model Number WTW4950XW0

I ordered an actuator part for my Whirlpool WTW4950XW0, It looked a lot different than the original part since it had black plastic housing and some kind of adapter. Will this work on my model. I did install it a few weeks ago with no luck. Basically, nothing function on my washer. However, I am willing to give it another shot because I did not recalibrate my machine. Also, is there any advice to putting on the newer black-housing part ' Thank you, Dave

1 Answer

David, The actuator is the correct one and you only use the adapter if needed. Try the recalibration and if you are still having trouble then run the diagnostics and check for fault codes.

Mike, It is recommended to put the unit into service diagnostic and see if there is an error code. If there is then you would follow the tech sheet showing what to test to determine what part would need to be replaced.
