The Ice Bucket Coupling is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This coupling connects the ice bucket to the auger motor, allowing the motor to rotate the auger and dispense ice through the dispenser chute. It plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the ice dispensing system by ensuring a secure and effective transfer of motion from the motor to the ice bucket's auger.

Symptoms of a failing Ice Bucket Coupling include:

  • The ice dispenser not dispensing ice or dispensing it inconsistently
  • The auger not rotating when the dispenser lever is pressed
  • Unusual noises, such as grinding or clicking, coming from the ice bucket area
  • Visible wear, cracks, or damage to the coupling

Causes of a bad ice bucket coupling can include regular wear and tear from frequent use, physical damage from ice jams or blockages, and degradation of the coupling material over time.

This OEM part is also compatible with some models from Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore.

Hello. I just replaced the W11629923 and WP8281164 , and observed these issues: 1. The coupling seems loose, I can move it laterally with my fingers giving the impression that the screw is too long. 2. When pressing the flap in the front of the refrigerator to get ice, the auger drops 1 or 2 pieces and then stops moving, I can hear the motor spinning but it seems that there is no force to move the auger. 3. The ice crusher does not work, the motor keeps moving but the auger does not move. Can you please provide advice? I will appreciate your help to fix this problem. Thanks in advance for your support,' Eduardo

Eduardo, it would be recommended that the coupling be checked to ensure that the seal WP2198661 is in place and that the screw or auger threads have not been damaged. It is possible that the screw has started to cross-thread and is not securing properly. This can cause the coupling to slip.

Tim, there would not be an additional item that would sit between the coupling and the shaft. It would be recommended that the bin latch 2317277 and the bottom of the bin are inspected for any broken parts or ice that could be causing it to not seat fully and lock in place.

Dan for Model Number KitchenAid KSSC36QTS00

Hello, I am having an issue with our ice maker. It has been working fine being able to dispense cube and crushed ice with no issues until tonight. It was switched to crushed ice and it stopped dispensing ice. Changed to cubed and I could hear the motor running but no ice dispensed as well. After about 5 mins I tried again and was able to get cubed ice but what seemed to be at a slower rate. When switching to crushed, I could hear the motor running but no ice will dispense. I am also able to move the auger arm in the ice bucket. I have checked the auger arm when calling for ice in cubed mode (with little to no ice in the bucket) and when i open it to check I can see the arm has advanced. Also there is some play on the coupling when i took the ice bucket out to look at the bottom. I am unsure if I need to buy a new coupling or to replace the shaft or motor? Thank you in advance.

Dan, Based on the way that the motor is acting it sounds like the motor is on the way out and you would need to replace the motor W10822635.

P Gomez, There is probably some rust build up on the motor shaft. You can order a food safe silicone to install on the new shaft and coupler of the ice bucket. WP542638 The new shaft part number will be WP2188917

Rachel for Model Number ED5LVAXWS00

Our ice maker is not dispensing ice. I can hear the motor working when I press the lever, but the auger does not spin the ice at all. I have experimented with different scenarios and here is what I know: the auger will spin when there is no ice in the container, the drive shaft rod spins when the lever is pushed, and the auger can be manually turned without ice present. I have also tried scooting the drive shaft coupling down so the drive shaft reaches higher into the ice bucket coupling; but that didn't seem to work either. At this point I am thinking the ice bucket coupling is stripped...but I am unsure. Any advice? Thanks

1 Answer

Rachel, It would be unlikely that the ice bucket coupling is stripped. This issue would most likely be bad gears inside the motor that is not allowing the auger to turn with any pressure against it. This would require the motor to be replaced.

Hello Carmen. Many factors can cause it to blow. Usually the heat blows it. However, there was a harness issue. If you do not install the small harness sent with the new fuse, it will continue to blow over and over again.

Hello Carmen. This is an issue caused by the door liner being made of plastic. You see, the issue is caused by the plastic door liner changing shape by a small amount and this makes the shaft too short. Believe me, this steel shaft cannot strip. When the motor is setting effectively further away, this makes the shaft slip because it isn't meshing fully. I remove the two 1/4 inch hex headed screws and set the plastic "keeper" and spring aside. Pull the shaft up, out of the hole, (you can grab it with needle nosed pliers). Wrap electrical tape, sticky side out, around itself about 20 times or so and shove the wad of tape into the bottom end of the shaft. It may take a few trys to get the length right, but when you get it right, the shaft will mesh on both ends and it will dispense again. This is one of two ways to correct this issue. The other one is to replace the freezer door assembly.

Julie, The IDI dispenser uses a two direction motor to dispense the ice. When Cubes is selected the motor turns counterclockwise and the cubes fall through the chopper blades and aren't chopped up. When Crushed is selected the motor turns clockwise and the cubes are pushed through the chopper blades and the cubes are chopped up. At this point you most likely have a defective dispenser motor W10822606.
