Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Heating Element Kit (Part Number: OEM11523426)

1 Answer

Hello Rick, The heating element can be replaced without pulling the unit but if you have never done this job before, it is rather difficult. You also have to have very small hands in order to reach the element nuts. I would recommend the unit removal to get this done without any issues. As for the control board, it is in the door panel so of course you don't have to pull the unit to do this part of the repair.

Grant M. for Model Number KUDIO1ILBS5

This dishwasher stopped working. I had a service person come and he replaced the fuse with the new wiring harness the same as the replacement part you sell. I asked him at the time if the fuse would fix the problem or if there is an underling problem. He said the new replacement fuse with the wiring harness was better than the old one and the dishwasher should be fine now. It worked for several months then stopped again. I did not want to call them back because it was too expensive. I tested the fuse myself and it was blown again. At your advice I ordered 3 fuses and the heating element AP3841139. I installed the first fuse. I left the wiring harness on that the repair person put on, it looked identical to the one supplied with the fuse. The unit turned on and I was able to empty the water and old soap. I let it run for a full cycle to clean it out. Before the full cycle ended the machine stopped, I think at the water heating cycle. The tub was full of hot water and all the lights were out. I tested the fuse and it was blown. I installed the second the fuse I bought and again left the wiring harness in place. I only ran the machine on cancel to empty the water. I then installed part # AP3841139 the heating element and the new circuit board part that came with it. I ran the machine and again the fuse blew again I think at the water heating cycle. Hot water was in the tub. I then installed the third fuse I bought and ran the dishwasher on cancel to get the water out of the tub. I have now installed my last fuse. I turned the circuit breaker off and do not know what to do. Between the original service guy, $250, and the parts I purchased from you, $200, I have about $450 into repairs and the dishwasher is not working. Do you have any suggestions? Grant

Hello Grant, The fuse that keeps blowing is blown by excessive current flow. I would first remove the kickpanel and check the wire nuts where the power is connected to the unit. If they aren't discolored or burned, you next should check the resistance of the motor windings. If one of the three motor windings are going bad, when the additional current pull from the heater coming on goes through the fuse, it's enough to blow it. There is a winding in the drain pump motor that should read 16 ohms. There are two windings in the circulation pump motor. The run winding should read 3.7 ohms and the aux. winding, (start winding), should read 6.25 ohms. The heating element should read 16.3 ohms. In the particular failure you are describing, the manufacturer recommends replacement of any component on the unit that appears to have been hot, (discoloration). There was one unit I repaired that the customer actually had to replace the wiring from the breaker to the unit as the electrician had installed wiring that was rated too small for the application. We learned this from referring to the installation manual which came with the unit. There was another that had to replace the breaker. We found it by running the unit and I went back to turn the breaker off and the breaker was really hot. Anyplace in the circuit that can build resistance will shoot the fuse. Let us know if we can render any more assistance to aid in the resolution of this issue. KUDI01ILBS5

Hello Kevin. Check and make sure when you installed the new control board kit 8194200, you have the ribbon cable seated properly on the control board. If so, and the problem continues, you will need to replace the control panel WP8531257 on the unit. Hope this helps.

Hi Larry. You need to check the entire water manifold system to make sure the wash arm in question is coupled into the back manifold correctly. Is everything intact ? Is the rack upper and lower adjustment cocked to one side and not allowing the manifold to enter the manifold probe correctly for water ? If the rack is not adjusted together side to side, then the manifold will be misguided not entering the back water supply tube. If all this is correct then you need to clean the wash arm jet holes for clog with a pick tool. Then flush out under the sink- inverted. Have you cleaned the entire sump filter area down to the chopper blade level so there are no debris blocking the internal pump pressure ? Try all of this and let us know how to assist. further w/ poss. parts needed. Thank You.

Hello Larry. Press heated dry, Normal, heated dry, normal, heated dry, and normal. The unit will start. Let it run out the cycle. Then you will always need to get the water hot at the sink before starting the dishwasher and running the unit. This should prevent the cold code. Hope this helps.

Larry, the element and control board are the least likely issue, at this point, based on your post. " Condition Consumer is experiencing longer than normal cycle times, poor cleaning or drying. CAUSE The heating element is open and is not providing heat for washing or drying. RESOLUTION Replace the heating element with a kit, Part # 8194200, consisting of an element and an electronic control. To improve heater quality, the heating element is being replaced with a new style element with a higher wattage. The new element has a different shape but uses the same brackets as the original element." You may want to return the control you purchased and order the reccomended kit as you mentioned. But, at this point, you more than likely have an issue in the control panel/keypad assembly WP8531257.You most likely have a keypad that is shorting out or collapsing and making a different selection during the operation of the cycle. Good Luck and Thanks

Cindy, You're correct on both counts, The element was substituted into a "kit" due to the change in the wattage of the circuit, and to meet energy requirements, and better performance. No, you don't have to be a taechnician to perform the repalcement, but you do need to be careful, and make sure you turn the power off to the dishwasher before you start the repair, and watch out for sharp edges on the frame and tub works. You should be able to use basic hand tools to accomplish the work needed, so yes you should be albe to do the repair. Thanks and Good Luck

Hi Brian. It is not difficult to replace both. More time consuming then hard. If you have small arms then you may be able to reach in all the way laying on one side to the heater connections / nuts. A small adjustable wrench will do. make sure the connectors are tight. Then you remove all the inner door panel screws and unhook all dispenser wire connectors. Set the door aside. Then concentrate on the control panel connections. Take a cell phone picture if needed or mark all wire - to - board connections before removal. There is a wiring diagram supplied with the unit behind the kick plate or the controls if needed. Make sure that you ground -out yourself at least 4x to insure static discharge so you do not accidentally ruin the board. Then the body of the new board is UN clipped from the back of the keypad. UN hook the ribbon cable and lay aside. Make sure the ribbon cable is not pinched upon reassembly. Do not touch the inside of the circuit board !. Thank You.
