The Ice Maker is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It automates the ice production within the freezer, providing a steady and reliable supply of ice cubes.

Causes of a bad Ice Maker can include malfunctioning water valves, clogged filter systems, or issues with the thermostat that affect ice production. Additionally, mechanical failures in the ice ejector arms or the heating mechanism that releases the ice can prevent proper functioning.

Symptoms of a bad Ice Maker include:

  • No ice production or very slow ice production
  • Ice cubes that are smaller or larger than normal
  • Ice that tastes odd or smells bad
  • Loud noises during the ice-making process

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Ice Maker Assembly (Part Number: OEM18079050)

Thomas, it would be recommended that the ice bucket switch W11123943 (manufacturer has discontinued this item) and the icemaker on/off switch W10918003 are inspected and tested for proper operation while the door switch is taped in the closed position. The bucket switch should have 120VAC at each terminal when tested to ground while the switch is pressed in (it is easiest to use tape to hold the switch in place). The on/off switch should have 120VAC at each terminal when tested to ground while in the on position. If neither have 120VAC going to them, the switches would need to be tested for continuity (bucket switch should have continuity when pressed in and the on/off switch should have continuity when in the on position). The wiring at the hinge would need to be inspected for any breaks or damaged wires and repaired as necessary. If all of this tests properly and there is not a damaged wire, then the main control WPW10743957 would be the cause of failure.

Ron, You will want to make sure that you give the unit 24 hours to make the first batch of ice. If there is still no ice being made then check to make sure that the emitter board has the light on and it will be flashing when the bin is removed. Once the flapper is closed the light should be solid. If this checks ok then you will need to check to see if there is power getting to the water valve when the icemaker calls for water. If it is then the valve will be the issue. The ice maker and dispenser valves are independent of each other so one could work where the other will not.

Undercool for Model Number WRS571CIHZ01

Brand new Whirlpool fridge with ice maker w10873791. Water dispenses normally with good pressure. Still no ice after a week. Got tech sheet from behind kick plate and ran harvest test #44 fine, but get code 23 (switch faulty or motor). Not sure if that is normal Trying to run fill test #45 and get code 02 "water fill is OFF". Pressing SW3 does not turn water fill ON. Continuity good on all switches and inlet valve. If I manually apply 115V to freezer valve, it runs properly and supplies water. Could this be the thermisor or a bad switch in the ice maker not sending signal to the valve?

1 Answer

Undercool, This would be more likely an issue of the icemaker not sending power to the valve and would requires a new icemaker.

Jim for Model Number 106.51133213

My Kenmore refrigerator model 106.51133213 has stopped producing ice. This has happened twice previously but in each of those cases it had spontaneously resumed operations with in a few days. The power switch for the ice maker is on and water dispenses from the refrigerator door. The freezer temperature is 5 degrees. Trouble shooting steps from the manual like powering the refrigerator on and off have not made a difference. Everything appears normal except that the ice production shutoff arm is locked up in the "ice production off" position even though the ice bin is empty. It will not move down to the "ice production on" position even when applying firm pressure. I assume the simple reason it is not producing ice is because of the position of the shutoff arm. I can't get it to move. suggestions?

1 Answer

Jim, The arm on this ice maker is in the on position. The arm should be up and does not turn the ice maker on and off as other units do. With this, it has an on/off switch that turns the icemaker on and off. The arm is just a sensor arm to let you know when the ice is full. WIth the icemaker not cycling this would be more likely a faulty ice maker.

Doug for Model Number WRS571CIHZ00

We found, after 1.5 years of ownership the tray for our icemaker had broken off and was resting on top of the bin. We replaced the icemaker and I find that water freezes on the plastic arm which goes down to sense if the icemaker is full and I have to periodically break the ice off the arm. When i take out the bin I find frozen drops both behind the tray and on the arm. I thought possibly I had too much water pressure so restricted the water flow by partially closing the valve, which did not help. I also get clumping of ice in the bin. It seems like the icemaker tray is overfilling or maybe the fill spout is not aimed right. Any suggestions?

1 Answer

Doug, it is recommended that the gaskets are inspected for any air gaps that could be causing this issue. From there, it would be recommended that the fill tube is inspected for signs of water leaking through (usually beads of ice will accumulate on the fill tube). If there is a sign of leaking, the valve WPW10238100 would need to be replaced. If there is not a sign of water leaking by, then it would be likely that the diverter valve WPW10341320 is not closing properly.

Wildcat, I would recommend checking the wiring at the bottom of the door, if it is ok, there are no adjustments to the ice maker then replace the ice maker. [AP6026347}

Wade for Model Number Whirlpool WRS555SIHZ00

Bought this unit about a year and half ago. Everything has been working fine until two things happened and I do not know if anything is related. Last week our water company had a failure that cut off all water to our house and at the same time I changed the filter in the refrigerator. Once water was restored to the house and the filter was changed, the ice maker quit working. I have good water pressure at the water dispenser. Everything else on the refrigerator is working fine. Any ideas?

Hello Wade, it may be unrelated, this model being a SXS ref and the ice maker is in the door, check the lower freezer door hinge area for any wire problems where the door connects to the main cabinet. If any wire problems are found the freezer door would need to be replaced. Your ref came with a Tech Sheet for testing it is located under the front grill, you can run the test mode and check the operation of the ice maker by running tests 29,31,33.

Mike for Model Number KRSC503ESS00

Hello, Our Ice maker recently stopped working. It does not produce ice at all. For the past few months we have been using a lot (1/2 container daily) of ice . I checked the sensor arm and it is in the up position and does not move. I suspect it has been pushed beyond it's limit? Please let me know if you think it's the ice maker that needs to be replaced. The unit is abut 2 years old. Also, do yo have the procedure for replacement? Thanks in advance, Mike

1 Answer

Hello Mike, first, this model being a SxS ref, go to the bottom of the freezer door hinge and check the wires from the frez door to the cabinet for any wire problems. If any wire problem found the wire harness is not a replaceable part and is part of the freezer door. Next, your ref came with a tech sheet for testing, it is under/behinmd the front lower grill/kickplate, use the test mode to check the ice maker ,ice maker tests are 44,45,47.

Ted, the ice maker on/off switch W10918003 and the ice bin switch (mfg discontinued part, part number W11123943) will both need to be tested for proper operation. These switches should both have continuity when they are in the on position (bin switch pressed in). The ice maker fill tube will also need to be inspected for an ice block (if there is, the valve WPW10341320 would need to be replaced). From there, the wire harness at the hinge of the door will need to be inspected for any broken wires. If there are no broken wires, and the switches tested good, then the main control W11035841 would need to be replaced.
