Symptoms of a bad moisture sensor include:

  • Clothes taking longer to dry or coming out still damp
  • The dryer not stopping when clothes are dry

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Moisture Sensor (Part Number: OEM9282438)

David, If the two metal strips are present on the sensor, you may want to try cleaning the sensor assembly and area with some rubbing alcohol using a cloth or tooth brush. There may be a coating of softner residue on the bars, and cleaning the bars usually solves that issue. If you choose to replace the assembly, you will need to remove the back panel and unclip the retainer clips and remove the wires off the sensor bar terminals. There are still other possibilities, partially restricted vent pipe or hood, and vent thats too short can create an issue as well, there are also the usage cituations, overloaded, mixxed loads, etc.

Clyde, The filter signal is there to represent lower air flow than normal. The filter needing to be cleaned would be one reason for this and the other would be a clogged venting system. Try to take the hose off the back of the unit and see if the filter buzzer still comes on. If it does then the blockage is on the dryer side, maybe in the blower wheel. If it does not then the blockage is somewhere between the inside and outside of home.

Hello Lynn, It is not recommended to run the unit without the sensor bar as part of the cycles will not work properly.

John, This repair is not that difficult, and a basic "do it yourselfer" can perform it. In your case you may have to raise the top and "fish" the sensor bar wires back into the tumbler, through the opening in the rear bulkhead. Then attach them to the terminals on the sensor bars, and mount the assembly with the screw and clip. Mkae sure the bulkhead and screw hole were not danaged when the sensor assembly was pulled out of the wall. Thanks

Anne, The dryness sensor bar is a clip and screw fit. As long as the two stainless steel strips are present on the sensor block. you should be able to tighten the screw and secure the sensor block to the bulkhead. You may need to remove the sensor assembly, and check the mounting hole and bulkhead wall to see if theres damage there, if the wall or screw hole is "stretched" the sensor won't seat and secure properly.

Hello Debra. Try removing the vent from the back of the unit and see if it works properly. If the dryer is heating, the unit has to have a venting issue. It may be the blower wheel clogged on the unit. It sounds like there is some kind of venting issue with the unit.

Hello Santos. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly. If the venting is not the problem, you will need to make sure the heater is no grounded out. If the heater is good, and the element does not cycle, you may have a bad cycling thermostat WP8318268 in the unit. Hope this helps.

Hi Terry. The sensor dry control is controlled from the sensor bars. You can "scuff" the sensor bars with a scotchbrite pad to remove any fabric softener build- up not allowing it to work properly. If you don't have any broken wires or connections, then you need control board part # WPW10476828. Thank you.
