My upper agitator is not working. I have watched your video and disassembled my agitator. I believe I have the "Short Cam Agitator" which I believe to be part #285809. My question is: when I disassembled my unit I have a white plastic ring that is flat with several "teeth" protruding from one side of the flat disc (ring). This part is included in the medium cam kit with part #285811. Mine appears to be in fine working order......but I am not sure where it goes! Can you help? I've looked at the parts diagram online but I cannot tell which part it is in the diagram. Thank you, Cory

1 Answer

Hello Cory. The ring goes on the top of the bottom part of the agitator before you snap the 2 parts together.

Hello Ben, Since there are several agitator kits, there is no way we can advise the correct part for your model without the model number from the units' I.D. tag. I apologize and appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Hello Emma, Most of the time when the center bolt is removed, the entire agitator comes out. This requires that the agitator be separated by holding the base down and pulling up on the top half. The grease is applied to the thrust spacer WP3951608, top and bottom of it. Be aware that a small amount is used to prevent any getting into the wash load.

2 questions, please 1) In this video, the gentleman is able to just lift out the top part of the agitator, while in the video for replacing the agitator dogs alone (part # AP3119063) he takes out the entire agitator and has to stand on the bottom section to separate it from the top. Is it realistic to think one can separate the two while the agitator is still in the machine? 2) In the description, it says that Whirpool recommends using a small amount of grease with this kit. How do you know if it is necessary to use it? I don't see any mention of grease in the description about the agitator dogs. Why would it not be necessary to use grease when just replacing the dogs? If grease is necessary, can one just use any silicone grease? Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Emma. No, the agitator must be removed from the unit to replace the parts. As for the grease, it is not needed just for the dogs. Only with the cam kit. And you must use the manufacturer recommended grease WP542638.
