Ron, The model number is not pulling up for us but you will want to check the ram and the corkscrew as that sounds like it would be more of the problem with the banging noise.

Sandy for Model Number Kenmore Elite compactor, Mod. 13633100

Compactor made noise while compacting trash & would not stop noise or return until power turned off at breaker. Turned breaker back on & ram returned to top & stopped. Tried again & same thing happened again. Changed plastic gear drive set, lubricated & retried. New gear stripped on 1st try. Small gear stripped both times. Pulled stripped gear off & rotated until ram went all the way to the bottom to be sure side gear units were in time with each other & they were fine & no binding until down against plastic stops at bottom of stroke. Does it have a thermal switch that tells the motor to stop & reverse before stripping the gear? All I need is the small drive gear to try again, but I am afraid it will strip it again unless replaced with steel gears. What do you suggest?

Hello Sandy, You either have a bad limit switch or the motor switch has failed. These are the only two things that will cause this issue.

Hello Jim. You need to check and see if the directional switch is installed properly and if any wires came loose when you were working on the unit. It sounds like the switch WP777811 is not reading correctly. The wires need to be on the same terminals as they were before the test.

Steve, You most likely have a stuck start switch W10813586 or sticky centrifugal switch W10439651, we're sending you some circuit information so you can test and determine which switch you'll need. Thanks and Good Luck

Hi Philip. You need to find out if it is an electrical or a mechanical issue? Remove the drive chain from the motor and see if the motor part # W10439651 will run as needed regulrily. The motor switch is part # W10439651. If it does without hesitation then look at the chain drive/ gears kit part 882699. Make sure the power screw is not binding in any way. If the power nut is needed it is part # WP777533. Thank You.

Hi George. Remove the power and pull the unit out completely. Remove the top/side cover. Look at the ram screw and all working gears and chain. Make sure that there are no broken or stripped parts. Make sure the power screw and the ram pressure pads are all lubricated w/ grease part # 675351. Clean the Bag container area and the drawer glides so all is clear and the front closes completely. Let me know how to assist. further when you have all this done.... Thank You.

Hello Rob. Most of these I've seen with this complaint has a bad switch WP777811 or a bent lever on the switch, (which by the way usually still requires switch replacement). I hope this helps you in your repair. Have a great day!

Kelly, A faulty directional switch would not allow the ram to move up or down, or would cause the ram motor to run constantly. The more likely situation is a faulty control switch or motor control switch, if the unit is partially compacting the contents. Thanks

Hi Ken. It sounds like the debris may have gotten down into the ram assy. You need to get a shop vac. and clean the entire unit. The directional switch contacts are getting burnt and needs replaced. Part # WP777811. Thank You.
