The Dryer Timer is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It controls the drying cycles by regulating the duration and sequence of operations, ensuring that clothes are dried properly according to the selected settings.

Over time, the dryer timer can wear out due to regular use, electrical issues, or internal mechanical failures. A faulty timer can lead to cycles not starting or ending correctly, resulting in under-dried or over-dried clothes.

Symptoms of a bad Dryer Timer include:

  • The dryer not advancing through cycles
  • The timer not moving or stopping
  • Inconsistent drying times or the dryer stopping mid-cycle

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Timer (Part Number: OEM18040149)

1 Answer

Robert, Set the timer dial in a "timed Dry" setting and allow the dryer to run for 10 minutes, If the dial moves(advances) then the issue is not the timer. It would be in the air flow and/or heat of the dryer. The dryer has to heat properly in order for the timer to advance in a "automatic cycle". The place to start would be at the exhaust vent system and vent hood. Make sure there are no clogs, kinks or blockages in the pipes or hood.

Hello Joan, The prime suspect is the temperature switch WP8578354. You could check for any wiring shorting to ground at the back of the switch, but this really sounds like the switch will take care of the issue. If it were a shorted heating element or a timer issue, the problem would show itself in other cycles.

Becky for Model Number IED4400vq1

Dryer won't work. I had checked all the components, even replaced some when they didn't need it! I hear the timer running and it does advance, but when I went to check it by taking it out, I hear rattling. I opened that up and put the plastic piece back on, (I did notice a little spot that looks like it was burnt and I noticed that when I went to take the timer off, the little plastic clip on top where you separate it, was bent a little, like it was replaced before)then I put it back together and it is still not running. I checked all the wiring, all looks great. I even replaced the cord, when it is still fine. I have no idea what is wrong with it. I read that it could be the starter switch, replaced that but to find out the original was fine, changed the thermal fuse, found out the same, even the door switch... all the original parts are fine.(This is costing us more then a new dryer would because once you open the package, they don't do returns... $$ we don't have to be spending on a new one or now getting this one fixed by having someone come out and do it). We bought this dryer at the beginning of last year. so the warranty would of been already expired. Everything shows it should be running and fine, but nothing.... yes I did check the breaker, both are fine... what could be wrong?

Becky, You'll need to check across the timer terminals blue and black with the timer in a cycle, the circuit should be "closed" on a multimeter. You could have a bad contact inside the timer, still. Check and make sure the blue wire from the timer to the thermal fuse, the wire from the thermal fuse to the motor, and the thermal fuse itself, have "closed" circuits. We know you have voltage into the timer, because you hear the ticking noise, but no voltage to the motor, or it would start and run, or at least make a noise, when the start button is pressed. Good Luck

Hi Drc. The timer is part# WP8566184. There is a wiring diagram in the back of the controls folded up. Remove power. Remove knob. Remove back panel screws. Unscrew the front screws holding the timer. It may have a latch that you unclasp from the rear. Black from power to "BK" on the timer. Blue wire to "BU" @ timer. Violet to "V' on timer. White to "W". Tan to "T'. White w/black stripe to "WB". Blue /black to "BB". Red wire to "R". Reassemble in reverse. Thank You.

Hi Ed. I will try to give helpfull advice so your dryer will perform more completely. Yes if your conditions are as such, then I would replace the timer. This part # is WP8566184. Check and make sure you have 240 volts coming to the dryer. Check and make sure the unit is not set to Air Fluff. Also check the heater and thermal fuses and see if they are good. You can test these with a multi-meter MA-DM1. They should read closed for continuity. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html Thank you.
