The problem was that the motor coupler & shaft had a tiny bit of rust at their union. With the weight of the ice bin it rusted in the lowest position. This didn't allow the motor coupler to float on the shaft. There is a spring inside the shaft that pushes up on the motor coupler keeping it engaged in the ice bin coupler above. Easy to remove the metal parts from the old bin. The only problem was that the screw that holds the adapter has red thread locker and screwdriver rounded off the head of the screw. Drilled the screw and heated the screw to loosen the thread locker and used an ease out to remove the screw. Read more

However, due to the disassembly involved to get to it, I decide to also change a couple of other parts involved in the defrost process, which are also located in the same compartment as the defrost thermostat. Reviewed the AppliancePartsPros.com site and decided that the most likely suspect was the ice motor. I ordered one and got it FAST! I removed the water ice tray in the bottom of the Ice/water kiosk which exposed two phillips screws which I removed. The front panel came off by lifting upward and unplugging it. The video was very helpful, but my KitchenAid model required slightly more steps. Only the two screws in front held the filter housing, same as the video shows, but it has to be removed from the rear. My model did not have the wire brace, only the two front screws held the housing. Shut the water off and pull the electrical plug. Remove the two screws holding the filter housing in the front. Replaced entire ice maker. A couple of important points. (1) The ice maker module does not include all parts. The door flap for example is not included. So save all plastic parts from the old unit including screws. The biggest installation problem was the power cable. There was little room on the side of the ice maker for the cable and connectors to fit. Make sure the connector that mates with the refrigerator cable is seated onto the plastic housing and does not stick out or dangle out.... Read more
