This is a 12 year old Kenmore, but my experience applies to many dishwashers. The machine had run for almost a year without being cleaned. Mounts on the pump outlet to secure and center the lower spray arm. Replace if cracked, broken, or worn to restore proper arm rotation and alignment.
I initially just removed the spray arm and top cover of pump assembly inside the bottom of the washer. Removed match sticks, broken glass bits, a small metal ball, broken plastic fork. Although we had a service contract with Sears I elected to take a quick look to see what was wrong.
