Russ, If the motor runs in the agitate and operates properly then it would not be the issue. If the motor turns on and click out on overload then the most likely cause would be a faulty timer in which the contacts for the agitate and spin are making at the same time.

Paul for Model Number cap2761jq0

The motor on this unit will only hum, but does not rotate. After pulling the pump, I can spin the shaft and the motor will start - either direction. Then it will agitate and spin properly. I checked the capacitor, and it seems to be giving 19 mfd (give or take a decimal point) anyway, it loogs good. The motor start switch was loose, and removing it, it seems there is a bit of wear on the part that rides on the centrifugal switch. Should I take a stab at replacing the switch - it seems possible that is is not allowing the start winding to engage, so the motor just hums.

Paul, If you removed the pump and the unit started spinning and agitating then you will want to check to make sure that the pump is not seized or clogged. If this checks ok then yes the motor switch could be at fault.

Judy for Model Number Whirlpool LA6800XT

The washing machine will not agitate on "low speed". During the Regular/Normal Cycle - the washer is suppose to wash/agitate for 4 minutes high speed (which it does) and then 6 minutes low speed. During these 6 minutes the washer does not agitate at all. Consequently if I try a load on the Delicate cycle - it is suppose to wash/agitate for 4 min low speed, soak, then wash again 2 min low speed - but I get no agitation at all. Everything else seems fine with the cycles - fill, rinse, spin, drain - all work fine. During the time when the low speed agitation should be occurring - I hear a rhythmic ticking sound until that low speed cycle is complete - then the washer continues on to the drain and spin part of the cycle. Thanks so much for any suggestions or help you can provide!

Judy, You will want to check the motor when set for the low speed to see if the motor is getting power. You will want to check for 120 vac across the orange and white wires on the motor. If there is power then the low speed winding is bad and would need to be replaced. If there is no power then the timer is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Frank, Based on your post, it's more likely a timer issue, or gear case problem, 99% of the time, if the motor runs in one direction, it will reverse and run in the opposite direction, provided the proper circuitry and voltage is supplied from the timer. Without a proper model number, you may also want to remove the drain pump and motor, and turn the coupler on the transmission input gear several revolutions in both directions, to make sure a "locked up" transmission is not the case.

Hello Ramiro, You will want to check to make sure that the pump does not have something clogged in it. You can test by removing the clips from the pump and try to start unit. If the unit continues to do the same then the most likely cause would be the start switch. If it starts normally then it is a clogged or bad pump.

Hello David, You will want to check the pressure switch and pressure hose. Make sure that the pressure hose is not clogged or kinked which would cause the unit to sense that the unit has water in it.
